Chapter 540
With a swift, threatening motion, Nathan's hand lifted, poised to strike Laura.
Cassie, acting on instinct, lunged forward, yanking Laura behind her and leveling a frigid glare at Nathan. "Lay a hand on Laura, if you dare," she challenged, her voice laced with venom. "Remember, I carry the heir of the Hernandez family within me. If you harm us, you risk forfeiting your newfound status as the Zenith family's CEO."
Nathan's arm froze mid-air, his face twisting into a derisive sneer. "The Hernandez family's progeny?" he scoffed dismissively. "What's so extraordinary about that? My sister will bear them in due course."
"Megan," he addressed his sister, who frowned at him in disapproval and shook her head.
"Face it, Megan," Nathan continued, his tone icy. "This position was rightfully yours until she usurped it. Now that you've returned, you should step aside and cease meddling with Joseph's happiness and yours."
Cassie's response was indifferent, her voice devoid of emotion. "Your words are wasted on me, Nathan. Take your grievances to Joseph."
Nathan faltered, his gaze hardening. "I speak only the truth. Look at how well Joseph treats my sister. The moment you reappeared, he willingly relinquished the Zenith family reins to me. Just yesterday, he closed a ten-billion-dollar deal on behalf of the Zeniths. Cassie, take a good look at your disfigured face in the mirror. How can you possibly compare to my sister?"
Laura's fury erupted. "If Cassie hadn't been framed and disfigured, she would outshine that harpy Megan by a thousandfold."
"Who are you calling a harpy? Laura, you will apologize to Megan this instant."
Michael's voice cut through the tension like a knife, his face darkening with a warning as he approached the group.
Laura smirked defiantly. "Did I misspeak? Why should I apologize? Didn't you hear Nathan's slanderous remarks?"
"Michael, you arrived just in time. These women have been insulting my sister," Nathan interjected hastily, " Cassie has been using her pregnancy as a shield to humiliate us, and Laura even had the audacity to kick me. Look, you can still see her shoe print on my body."
Michael's gaze flickered over Nathan before settling on Laura and Cassie, his expression grim. "You both will apologize."
Laura's irritation flared. "Michael, have you lost your mind? You'll believe any tale spun by this..."
Her words were cut short by the sharp sound of a slap. Michael had struck Laura across the face.
Laura stood frozen, shock etched on her face. Cassie's voice trembled with rage. "Michael, how dare you strike my friend..."
Before Cassie could finish her sentence, Laura had already lunged at Michael, her fury transforming her into a wild, clawing creature.
"You dare to hit me, Michael? I've tolerated your idiocy for far too long," Laura spat, her fingers tangled in his hair. Michael tried to push her away, but she bit down on his face.
"If your brain isn't functioning, go home and eat more nuts. Although, even that won't help your dimwittedness. Now that I've lost my job and been blacklisted, I have nothing to fear from you," Laura taunted.
Laura's anger was palpable. After a flurry of punches and kicks, she left Michael disheveled, his clothes torn and his face marred with bite and scratch marks.
The onlookers were stunned into silence.
Michael, who had never before been so thoroughly assaulted by a woman, mustered all his strength to throw Laura to the ground.
"Laura, you're courting disaster," he growled, advancing menacingly towards her.
Cassie rushed to Laura's side, wrapping her arms protectively around her.
"Michael."
Joseph's voice, cold and stern, echoed through the room as he moved towards Cassie.
It was fortunate that Joseph had decided to join them upon hearing of Michael's arrival. Given the longstanding animosity between Cassie and Michael, his presence was necessary to prevent an all-out brawl.
