Chapter 1565 Stranger
Laura couldn't be bothered to explain and just shrugged, "Yeah, sure, whatever. I'm not as ashamed as you, but that's my business. You don't get to lecture me."
Michael shot back, "Why not? We have a daughter together. Your actions affect her too. If you're raising Maeve, you need to set a good example. She'll get married someday, and if you have a bad reputation, it'll drag her down."
Michael was like a porcupine, all prickly. He hadn't planned to say all this, but seeing Laura, he just couldn't help himself.
Laura sneered, "You, the one who cheated during our marriage, have no right to criticize me. Forget it, I'm not as shameless as you. Say whatever you want."
Maybe she'd dealt with Michael's shamelessness too many times; Laura had gotten used to it. She could even manage not to get angry or argue with him.
Suddenly, she didn't even feel like talking to Michael and turned to leave.
Michael grabbed her wrist and pulled her back.
"What are you doing?" Laura was startled and yanked her hand away.
In the struggle, Michael noticed her nails painted in chestnut brown. The color looked great on her, but it made his heart ache even more.
Laura had never worn nail polish before. Michael only realized now how good she looked with it.
But he could no longer hold those hands.
The thought of another man holding Laura's beautiful hands filled Michael with a surge of irritation, making his face even darker.
Seeing him staring at her hands, Laura frowned and rubbed her wrist. "Michael, we argued a lot before the divorce, and now you're doing it again. Aren't you tired? Find someone else to argue with and leave me alone."
Michael pursed his lips in embarrassment and suddenly said, "I know everything. You didn't kidnap Megan; you took the fall for Bernice."
Laura froze, "How did you..."
She almost blurted out, "How did you know?"
Luckily, she stopped herself. No matter how Michael found out the truth, she couldn't admit it. Some things, once spoken, could be recorded. Although a recording might not be enough to convict, it could still ruin Bernice's career.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Laura said calmly after a moment.
Michael clenched his fists. The brief moment Laura panicked had been enough to prove the truth Lucas told him. "At this point, are you still covering for Bernice? How long have you known her that you're protecting her, shielding a ruthless criminal? Laura, your actions are obstructing justice."
Laura chose not to answer his question.
A surge of anger shot up to Michael's head. He grabbed Laura's shoulders and roared in frustration. "Laura, is Bernice worth more than our marriage and family? If you hadn't helped Bernice, we wouldn't have divorced. You think you're helping Bernice, but you're wrong. You're hurting her. That's not how friends help each other. You're too selfish. Have you thought about the victims' pain?"
Laura's shoulders hurt from his grip. She struggled but couldn't break free. Unable to bear it, she grabbed his wrist, twisted it hard, and finally pushed him away.
"Are you done? Even without Megan's kidnapping, I wanted to divorce you long ago," Laura said, her face full of disgust. "Michael, don't you get it? From the moment you hid Megan, there was no chance for us. I don't understand why you keep pestering me like a madman. Before we got married, I didn't realize you were this kind of person. If I had known, I wouldn't have married you."
Michael's face turned pale. "Fine, I was wrong, but I never wanted to divorce you. You shouldn't have helped Bernice."
"You said all that just because you feel sorry for Megan getting hurt?" Laura said impatiently. "If you have evidence, go ahead and sue. Don't bother me. Other divorced couples don't become enemies for their kids. But you, you keep causing trouble for me. Did I burn your house down or kill your parents? Are you done? Stay away from me. If you're crazy, see a doctor. Don't come to me."
Her eyes were filled with undisguised disgust.
Michael stood there like he was nailed to the spot.
"Stop arguing with me," Laura said. "It's always about Megan. If you keep harassing me, I'll have to talk to your parents or call the police."
Then she added, "And don't tell me you're Maeve's father. If you want to see Maeve, you can go to the Presidential Palace. If you want to know about her, you can add the nanny on Facebook or ask your parents. As for us, we're strangers now, got it?"
She turned and walked away decisively.
This time, Michael didn't grab her. He just stared at her back, his face full of pain.
He hadn't come to argue today. He just wanted her to understand that she shouldn't be covering for a criminal. But she was full of disgust for him, even calling him crazy and telling him to see a doctor.
Michael punched the wall hard.
He felt so suffocated and depressed that he was about to break down.
After getting out of the elevator, Laura walked to her office with a displeased face.
Laura's office was on the same floor as Cassie's. Feeling upset, she went straight into Cassie's office.
"Damn it," Laura threw her bag down and started complaining angrily, "I just got cornered by Michael downstairs. I don't know how he found out I took the fall for Bernice. As soon as we met, he accused me of covering for a criminal and obstructing justice. He's crazy. Megan is the real evil one. Who knows how many horrible things she's done and how many lives she's taken."
Laura continued, "I must have been blind to ever like Michael. Thinking about how I used to sleep with him makes me sick. Michael even blamed me, saying it was because I helped Bernice that we got divorced. My God, doesn't he know why we divorced? How can he blame me? Was his cheating not a big enough factor? I can't meet or talk to Michael anymore. I'm afraid it will shorten my life."
Laura sat on the couch and closed her eyes, looking like she was about to faint from anger.
