Chapter 1566 I Would Miss You
Cassie was caught off guard. Sure, Bernice had messaged her on Facebook last night, so she kind of expected Michael to show up. But Bernice also mentioned that Lucas had really laid into Michael. So, this morning, shouldn't Michael be apologizing instead of accusing her?
I mean, Michael did hurt Laura and totally betrayed their marriage. He should be feeling some regret, right?
But nope, Michael just made Laura even angrier.
Seriously, Michael was a total idiot.
Of course, there was another possibility. Maybe Megan said something to Michael when he got home last night.
"Alright, don't be mad. I was the one who asked Bernice to tell him the truth," Cassie said, gently patting Laura's head.
Laura's eyes widened in shock. "Cassie, what are you up to?"
"Just one of my plans. Don't worry, even if Michael knows, it won't matter. All the evidence of Bernice's stuff has been wiped clean," Cassie explained. "But I thought he would come to apologize to you today."
"Apologize?" Laura scoffed and pulled down her collar. "Look, my shoulder is red from his grip. He definitely didn't come to apologize; he just came to cause trouble because of Megan."
Cassie glanced at her shoulder and fell silent. Her eyes shifted to Laura's nails. "New nails? They look nice."
"Yeah, I got them done after dinner with Derek yesterday. I saw a nail salon and decided to get them done," Laura said, shaking her head. "How do they look? Pretty, right?"
"I think it doesn't matter if I find them pretty. What matters is if Derek finds them pretty," Cassie smiled and glanced at her earlobes. "The earrings are nice too. Did Derek give them to you?"
"Yeah, when Michael got married, Derek noticed I was in a bad mood and took me shopping. He bought me these earrings," Laura's mood lifted a bit as she talked about her new relationship. "I didn't dress up much when I was pregnant and after giving birth. Now I think, so what if I have a child? I still need to live beautifully."
"Yes, you look much more spirited after falling in love. Indeed, women need love," Cassie was genuinely happy for her. "The earrings are beautiful, and the nails are pretty too. It seems you're quite satisfied with your new relationship."
"There's nothing bad about it so far," Laura suddenly frowned in disdain as if she remembered something. "I used to think Michael was quite good-looking. But seeing him today, he looks so worn out and despondent. When I think about Derek's handsome face, divorce doesn't seem so bad. Michael and I never had the deep feelings you and Joseph have."
Cassie smiled and nodded. She realized that Laura had truly moved on. "By the way, I have some news for you." Cassie handed her a document. "I've reached a cooperation agreement with Mirage Beauty Emporium in Selaestan. They agreed to let our company send two formulators to their medical beauty research institute in Selaestan for two months of training. Do you want to go? If you don't, I'll have to send someone else from the team."
"Mirage Beauty Emporium?" Laura was shocked. She had worked abroad before and knew that Mirage Beauty Emporium was a top global luxury brand. They were involved in not just beauty and skincare, but also perfumes and lipsticks, and they had over 300 top experts in biology and dermatology worldwide.
Even though Laura had snagged a global newcomer award, she was still a rookie compared to the industry veterans.
"Oh my God, how did you pull that off?" Laura asked, totally shocked. "A huge company like Mirage Beauty Emporium partnering with a small company like ours?"
"Well, not exactly on our own," Cassie admitted. "Isabella helped us out. She agreed to one of the CEO's requests, which allowed us to exchange two researchers for training."
Cassie shrugged. "Laura, for the company to grow, we need to keep learning. You've been amazing, but you haven't been out much in the past two years, so your research has kind of hit a wall. And you're the heart of the company. While our sales are good, our goal is to move upmarket. Your research products aren't high-end enough yet, and I think you know that better than anyone."
Laura stayed quiet. She knew she was stuck. The training would be great for her career, but she was worried about Maeve.
"I know you can't bear to leave Maeve," Cassie said. "If you go, I'll take care of her for you. I can even bring her to the Hernandez Estate. I'll treat Maeve like my own child. But I think the Presidential Palace will also take good care of her. Think about it. This is a big opportunity. Let me know your decision tomorrow."
Laura left the office, lost in thought, clutching the document.
She really wanted to go, but Maeve was so attached to her, and she would miss her terribly if she couldn't see her.
Maeve would be well taken care of at the Presidential Palace, but it wasn't the same as being with her mom.
Thinking about this, Laura felt even more torn when she got back to the Presidential Palace and held Maeve that evening. She even felt guilty towards her.
A voice suddenly came from above her head. Derek hugged her from behind. "What's on your mind? You didn't eat much at dinner."
Laura jumped. "What are you doing? We're in the living room, and Arabella..."
"Arabella is watering the plants in the back."
Derek bent down and tilted his head, noticing the diamond pearl earrings on Laura's ears, which made her look even more radiant and lively.
He couldn't resist kissing her earlobe gently. "You look beautiful with those earrings. I'll get you a few more pairs next time."
Laura felt both shy and ticklish, almost dropping Maeve. "Derek, stop it."
Derek silently stared at her gradually reddening face and the charm in her eyes. His throat moved slightly, and just as he was about to kiss her, she suddenly said, "I have something to tell you."
"Alright, go ahead," Derek replied.
Seeing her serious expression, Derek sat down beside her.
Laura frowned. "Cassie secured an opportunity for me to train at Mirage Beauty Emporium's medical beauty research center for two months."
Laura bit her lip. "I'm really torn."
Derek understood, and the smile on his face gradually faded, his eyes growing deeper. "You can't bear to leave Maeve?"
"Yes," Laura nodded. "I'm hesitating whether I should go. Maeve is still so young and has never been away from me for two months."
"Is Maeve the only one you can't bear to leave?" Derek's handsome face darkened with a hint of disappointment.
Laura was stunned for a moment, then felt awkward when she realized. "No, it's just that Maeve is still young. Of course, I would miss you too."
