Chapter 1440 She's My Wife
Wasn't Laura supposed to divorce Michael and lose the presidential family's backing? So why was Derek still stepping in to help her?
Those reporters were kicking themselves now.
They thought they were about to land a huge story, but instead, they ended up ticking off Derek.
Derek smashed another camera right there, his eyes cutting through the crowd of reporters. "I deal with reporters every day, both local and international, but this is the first time I've seen such unprofessional behavior. Is this how most of Madison's reporters act, or is it just you guys? Do I need to get the press department to check if you're even qualified to be journalists?"
"We messed up, it won't happen again," A female reporter quickly stepped forward, stammering, "We were just too eager."
Derek walked over to Laura, helped her up from the ground, and then shot back at the female reporter, "It's not eagerness; you just love mocking people. You think that because Laura and Michael are getting divorced and she doesn't have the Jude Family's protection anymore, you can disrespect her and make fun of her without any consequences."
The group of reporters blushed at Derek's sharp words. Laura felt a wave of emotion.
Derek's words made her feel protected.
Derek glared at the group. "Let me tell you, even if Laura divorces Michael, she'll still be protected by the Presidential Palace and will remain the President's Goddaughter."
Derek's simple statement left all the reporters stunned.
There was a lot to unpack in that statement: first, that Laura might really divorce Michael, and second, that even if she did, her status as the President's Goddaughter wouldn't change.
And they had just messed with the President's Goddaughter.
The reporters were all downcast, some even wishing they could vanish on the spot.
Especially the reporter lying on the ground, whose legs were shaking as he looked at Laura pleadingly. "Laura, I messed up earlier. I'm sorry, please forgive me."
He said this while bowing his head to the ground.
"What are you doing? Get up," Laura said, flustered.
Laura really hated people who bowed at the drop of a hat, as if she wouldn't forgive them unless they did. If word got out, people would say she was abusing her power.
Especially since they were outside, and luckily, it wasn't rush hour, so there weren't many people around.
But the reporter didn't listen and kept bowing.
Derek coldly questioned, "Why is it that you don't bow when you see the President, but you rush to bow when you see us? Are you trying to force the Jude Family to establish a monarchy?"
With such a serious accusation, the male reporter was scared stiff.
Derek sneered and pulled Laura towards the car parked by the roadside.
Laura was in a daze the whole way. She thought of the reporters' expressions, clearly frightened by Derek's words.
She couldn't help but sneak a glance at Derek's handsome face, recalling how she had warned him on Facebook a few days ago.
A screech of tires snapped her out of her thoughts as a limited-edition sports car pulled up in front of them.
Michael jumped out of the car. He'd heard the media got wind of his and Laura's canceled wedding, and he was worried the reporters would target Laura instead of him.
But he didn't expect to see Derek holding Laura's wrist, about to get into a car.
And Laura, looking so calm next to Derek, was nothing like her usual fiery self around Michael.
Just one look at this scene set Michael off.
"Derek, you bastard, I knew you couldn't be trusted," Michael shouted, throwing a punch.
Derek was caught off guard; he could've dodged it.
But in a split second, Derek pulled Laura behind him and took Michael's punch.
Seeing Derek, who had just helped her, get hit, Laura screamed in anger, "Michael, are you crazy? You even hit your cousin."
Laura rushed forward and started hitting Michael with her purse.
The purse, which had cost her a small fortune, was big and packed a punch.
Michael quickly covered his face after being hit. A few days ago, Cassie had hit him in the face with a purse, and now Laura was doing the same. They really were best friends, even their fighting styles were the same.
"You know why I hit him, Laura. You're my wife, yet you're holding hands with him. Let me remind you, we are not divorced yet."
Michael seized the opportunity to grab her purse, angrily saying, "No wonder you're always shouting about wanting a divorce and moving to the Presidential Palace. You like Derek, don't you? Do you think he will become the President of Madison someday, and you want to be the First Lady?"
Laura's eyes widened. How could he think so lowly of her? Derek was his cousin.
Before she could say anything, Derek coldly warned, "Michael, we're in public, and our identities are not ordinary. Speak rationally. Laura was surrounded by reporters, and I came to help her. I grabbed her hand to lead her out."
"Did you need to hold her hand to lead her out? If you want to seduce her, just say so."
Michael was now completely annoyed with Derek. "Others may not know you, but I grew up with you. I know you well. You seem honest, but you're actually very cunning. If you didn't like her, why would you help her divorce me? With Laura's abilities, could she persuade your parents without your help? You must have helped a lot."
Derek raised his hand to wipe the corner of his mouth. "Michael, be kind. When you were good to Laura, I sincerely hoped your relationship would be good. But you don't deserve to be a husband. I can't help you just because you're my cousin. After all, Laura is also my family."
"She's my wife, she has nothing to do with you," Michael said angrily. "Your family relationship with her is all because of me."
Laura frowned. She understood what Michael meant. Without him, she wouldn't have any connection with the Carl Family.
She understood, but Michael's words also made her feel disappointed.
But what right did she have to speak?
Michael was telling the truth.
