Chapter 605

Joseph's brow furrowed as Cassie glanced his way, a playful laugh escaping her lips. "No need for that, Dad,?" she sad, her tone light. "I've no desire to be locked away like a madwoman again. Let's maintain a safe distance from her in the future." With that, she slid into the driver's seat of the car.

Once the engine hummed to life, Cassie remained stationary, her gaze fixed on the road ahead. Leaning out of the window, she called out to Joseph, "Could you move aside?"

Joseph's gaze lingered on Cassie, a complex mix of emotions swirling within him. She sat behind the wheel, sunglasses perched on her delicate nose, an aura of bold glamour surrounding her. The woman before him was a far cry from the Cassie he once knew. He felt a strange sense of unfamiliarity, yet he found himself unable to look away.

Confusion clouded his mind. He wasn't a man swayed by a woman's physical allure, yet here he was, captivated. After a few moments of internal struggle, he stepped aside, allowing the sleek white sports car to glide past him.

Nathaniel approached Joseph, breaking his reverie. "Joseph, we should head back now."

"Go investigate how Cassie managed to fake her death and escape. Find out who helped her," Joseph instructed, his voice cold as he turned to fix Nathaniel with a steely gaze. Nathaniel shivered under the intensity of his stare, quickly nodding in agreement.

Once inside the car, Joseph's attention was immediately drawn to a recent post on Cassie's Facebook page. The woman certainly knew how to make the first move. A small smirk tugged at the corner of his lips, freezing as he realized his reaction. He should be furious, having been deceived by Cassie for three years, yet here he was, smiling.

"Nathaniel," he began, his voice thoughtful, "Do you think Cassie was actually ill three years ago?"

"I can't say for certain," Nathaniel replied, his tone cautious. "But Megan is a professional. If she said Cassie was sick, she wouldn't have lied to us, right?" His voice trailed off, uncertainty creeping into his words.

Joseph was taken aback. It was true, three years ago, Megan had claimed that Cassie was suffering from depression, and he had believed her. But what if Megan had been lying? He rubbed his temple, dismissing the thought. Megan wouldn't do that.

His thoughts were interrupted by the ringing of his phone. It was Megan. "Joseph, are you back?" she asked.

"Yes, on the way," he replied. A moment of silence passed before Megan spoke again, her voice hesitant. "I just saw the news. Cassie is back, it seems..."

Joseph's mind was filled with images of Cassie's stunning appearance. "Yes," he confirmed, his gaze fixed on the passing scenery outside the window.

"Joseph, I..." Megan's voice wavered, a forced smile evident in her tone. "I saw that she has become really beautiful. She's even prettier than me. Has Cassie recovered? I feel anxious, afraid that you will go back to her."

Joseph quickly dismissed her fears. "Stop overthinking. We were never really together. I'm back," he assured her before ending the call. He forced himself to push thoughts of Cassie's appearance from his mind.

Upon his return to the seaside villa, Megan greeted him, clad in a seductive red silk nightgown. A sudden image of Cassie in her red dress flashed through his mind, equally captivating yet exuding an air of elegance.

Megan noticed his brief distraction. "What's wrong, don't I look good?" she asked, a pout forming on her lips as she gently shook his shoulder.

"It's nothing. I'm going to take a shower," Joseph replied, making his way upstairs.

Megan bit her lip, a look of determination in her eyes. When Joseph emerged from the shower, she wrapped her arms around him from behind, her voice soft and tempting. "Joseph, let's try again tonight."

Joseph remained still, his mind a whirl of thoughts. After a few moments, he gently pushed Megan away. "I'm going to sleep in the study," he declared.

Megan's eyes filled with tears. "Joseph, why? How are we going to have children?" she cried. "Are you repulsed by me, by what happened to me abroad?"

"No, I have never been repulsed by you, it's my problem," Joseph admitted, regret etched on his face. He couldn't understand his own behavior over the past three years. He knew he loved Megan, yet every time he attempted to take their relationship further, he found himself instinctively resisting. He even felt a growing aversion to intimacy with women.

Megan's face fell at his words. "Then, why don't you go to the hospital? I really can't bear this anymore," she pleaded.

In a sudden, desperate move, Megan undressed and lunged at Joseph. Caught off guard, Joseph instinctively pushed her away. Megan fell to the ground, her sobs filling the room as she grappled with the humiliation of rejection.

"I'm sorry," Joseph apologized, his voice filled with remorse. He removed his coat, draping it over Megan before lifting her into his arms and placing her gently on the bed. Without another word, he turned and left the room.
