Chapter 339
"Alright, call me if you need anything." Lucas turned to leave when Mabel's phone suddenly rang. "What... He's back?! Okay, okay, we'll come to the airport right now."
After hanging up, Mabel smiled at Luna and said, "Liam and Joseph just landed. Let's drive to the airport to pick them up. We can go for the check-up another time."
"Sure, Auntie, I can't wait to see Joseph too." Luna glanced triumphantly at Cassie before quickly leaving with Mabel.
Laura Miller looked at Cassie with nervousness and sympathy, but Cassie remained calm. "Let's go, the elevator's here."
"It looks like I'm stuck going with you guys again." After entering the elevator, Lucas cleared his throat with a light cough and said, "Luna and her wishful thinking! Joseph only has eyes for you. We, his brothers in arms, know him best. Don't overthink it."
"I'm not," Cassie said with a smile, genuinely relieved in her heart that Liam seemed alright.
Leaving the hospital, Laura Miller, worried that Cassie might dwell on things, suggested, "Let's grab a bite. I know a great spot."
"Sounds good."
They headed to the restaurant and ordered a lot of food. While waiting, Joseph suddenly called, "Where are you?"
"I'm eating oysters," Cassie stammered nervously, afraid of getting scolded since he detested those.
Joseph was momentarily silent before saying, "Tell me where you are; I'm coming to you."
Cassie was startled; wasn't Luna picking him up? Why wasn't he going to the Hernandez family estate first after returning from overseas and coming straight to her instead? "The place here isn't that great."
"Cut the chatter."
Joseph's tone grew impatient, so Cassie relented and sent her location.
Laura Miller was miffed. "Why did you let him come? I'm going to feel awkward eating."
"He insisted. How could I say no? Otherwise, he might suspect I'm with David again," Cassie said with a wry smile.
Twenty minutes later, Joseph's tall, distinguished figure appeared at the doorstep of the casual eatery.
Freshly back from France, it was evident he had endured hardship; his skin tanned a shade darker, but he looked even more rugged. His presence was as sharp as a drawn sword, entirely out of step with the relaxed atmosphere of the place.
Joseph stepped into the room, his foot unwittingly crushing a piece of toilet paper that had been carelessly discarded on the floor.
He tried to scrape it off but failed, darkening the scowl on his face.
"Let me get that." Cassie bent down to grab the paper, but Joseph quickly pulled her to her feet. "What are you doing?"
"Just trying to help." Cassie's voice was tentative. "Sorry, this place is a mess. I should stick with you."
"What do you mean 'stick with me'? Dinner just started."
Laura Miller snapped, her voice filled with ire. "Joseph, I've been wanting to tell you this—Cassie was engaged to David, who lost a kidney trying to save her. What have you done for her? You're the reason she's been in danger, and you have the gall to insult and hurt her, date her sister, and then act righteous like you're some kind of saint. Joseph, you think too highly of yourself."
Cassie flinched, feeling a cold sweat for Laura Miller. "Laura, stop talking."
