Chapter 583
Joseph had made the irrevocable decision to have the twins aborted. His grip on the doctor slackened, his handsome visage a portrait of utter defeat under the sterile, pallid hospital light. He was already hemorrhaging, the throbbing pain in his head intensified by a dizzying loss of blood.
"Joseph, you're bleeding out," Megan's voice cut through the haze, her hands urgently clasping his. "Let me take you to get bandaged."
A reflexive refusal bubbled up within Joseph, but Megan's words seemed to ensnare his senses, leaving him momentarily disoriented. Like a puppet, he followed her lead.
"No, Joseph, wait!" The doctor's anxious cry echoed behind them.
"Nathaniel, manage things here," Megan commanded, swiftly guiding Joseph towards the medical room.
Nathaniel's brow furrowed as he hastily grabbed the doctor's consent form. "Don't worry, I've got this. Saving lives is our priority."
"Alright." The doctor, placated, hurried back to the emergency room to attend to the patient.
Cassie was writhing in agony, her eyes clenched shut against the pain. But she wasn't entirely unconscious. She could faintly discern the doctors' conversation at her bedside. "I heard Joseph has a new flame. I didn't believe it at first, but now..."
"Disappointing, isn't it? His wife's life hangs in the balance, yet he couldn't be bothered to sign a single document. He doesn't care whether she lives or dies."
"Is that true?"
"Why would I lie? His assistant signed instead. It seems like no one cares about her anymore."
"I saw Joseph and that woman arm in arm."
"Typical men."
A single tear traced a path down Cassie's cheek.
'So, Joseph, this is your true nature.
'Even when your own wife's life was in danger, you refused to sign a single word.'
To him, Cassie's life was worth less than a beggar on the street.
Even now, his heart was filled with thoughts of Megan.
The love he once had for Cassie had disintegrated into dust.
From this moment on, if Cassie survived, she would harbor nothing but hatred for this despicable pair.
When Cassie finally managed to open her eyes in the hospital room, Megan was the only figure present. She was nonchalantly toying with a set of car keys. "See this? It's the limited edition sports car Joseph gifted you. But now the license plate reads: HX2LX, Joseph loves Megan. Sounds nice, doesn't it?"
Recognition flashed in Cassie's eyes.
Those keys had once been a personal gift from Joseph, the license plate number a source of envy for many women online.
She managed a serene smile. "So, you enjoy taking other people's leftovers? Cars, mansions, men... take them all. I couldn't care less."
"What does it matter if you care or not? Joseph only has eyes for me," Megan retorted, a smug smile playing on her lips as she approached the bed. "Just a word from me can ruin your friend. Nathan may be untouched, but your friend isn't so lucky. She's a pariah now, her reputation in ruins. Serves her right for calling me a bitch at the hospital."
"You knew Nathan would harm her?" Cassie's crimson eyes widened in shock.
"Of course." Megan leaned in, her smug smile widening. "It's a pity they didn't manage to get to the final step, but it doesn't matter. No man would dare to want her now."
Rage consumed Cassie, her chest heaving with the intensity of her pain.
She had just undergone surgery, and her body was wracked with tremors of agony.
