Chapter 1470 I Want to Live Better
"Mr. Nelson," Fiona looked at Lucas, puzzled. "You and Bernice?"
"Yeah, what you see is what you get. She'll be around a lot more. Go grab her some clothes and bring them over. And don't pack her schedule too tight or send her too far. I don't want my girl too busy, got it?" Lucas said casually.
"Got it." Fiona, a veteran in the industry, had seen this kind of thing plenty of times and quickly regained her cool.
When Bernice finished changing and was about to leave, Lucas suddenly grabbed her arm and pointed to his lips.
Lucas's move made Fiona quickly look away, though she was shocked inside.
Even though Fiona didn't know Lucas well, she'd heard from other agents that he was always cold and distant with women. Even when he was engaged to Sarah, he was frosty at company events, let alone asking for a kiss.
Bernice, however, didn't think much of it and numbly kissed Lucas on the lips before leaving.
Once in the car, Fiona finally let out a sigh of relief. "Bernice, a guy like Mr. Nelson can have any woman he wants. We can't stop him. But remember, don't get emotionally involved like you did with Gary."
The name "Gary" hadn't come up in a long time.
Bernice was lost in thought for a moment.
Fiona continued, "The hardest thing for a woman is emotions. When Gary got engaged, you were a wreck. I never thought you'd try to end it all. So don't make the same mistake again. Mr. Nelson is even more charming than Gary. Many actresses have had their hearts broken over him. But a guy like Mr. Nelson isn't someone you can dream about. Men's affection is fleeting; I've seen it too many times."
"Fiona, don't worry. My heart's not beating for anyone anymore," Bernice said with a genuine smile, appreciating Fiona's concern.
"Good. You might as well use your time with Mr. Nelson to get more resources," Fiona said.
Bernice absentmindedly curled up in her seat.
Resources?
Bernice hadn't thought that far ahead.
Her life should have ended yesterday.
Now, it felt like she was just surviving.
Megan wasn't dead, and she was being blackmailed by Lucas.
A deep sense of disgust and hatred festered in Bernice's heart, but she felt powerless.
She didn't really want to live; living was too painful.
When Bernice arrived at the military hospital, she brought some items and found Laura's ward.
Laura had just woken up from a nap and couldn't move, so she was watching TV with Cassie.
Seeing Bernice, Laura was both surprised and delighted. "Bernice, I'm so glad you're okay."
Bernice looked at the bandages on Laura's chest, feeling conflicted. "I heard from Lucas that you broke your rib."
"It's nothing. The doctor said it'll heal in a while," Laura said cheerfully. "Cassie and I were just talking about you. We're really grateful to you. You stood up to Megan for us. I've disliked her for a long time."
Laura's smile tugged at Bernice's heart. She turned to meet Cassie's curious and questioning eyes.
"Bernice, I didn't know you were friends with Nina. You never mentioned it," Cassie said, pouring Bernice a glass of water. "Sit down. I hope the three of us can have a good chat."
"There's not much to say. I've known Nina since we were kids. I even knew Esmeralda before she joined the Zenith Family," Bernice said, taking the glass. "I was really angry after hearing what Laura said that day. I was too impulsive."
"You're not an impulsive person," Cassie said calmly. She had thought a lot about it. Even if Bernice and Nina were close, it didn't make sense for Bernice to risk her life for revenge.
Moreover, Bernice was risking not just her life but also her hard-earned honor and status in the entertainment industry.
And when Cassie used to hang out with Nina, she never heard Nina mention Bernice.
Bernice felt bitter. She knew Cassie was suspicious, but she couldn't possibly tell them that her soul was Nina's.
"Maybe you think too highly of me. Nina and I were really close, very close," Bernice said with difficulty, "Everyone has their secrets. Just know that everything I did was for Nina and Esmeralda. Laura, I'm also grateful to you. I never meant to drag you into this."
"Don't say that. I think I did the right thing," Laura interrupted Bernice. "When Nina was in trouble, Cassie and I were too weak to do anything. We could only watch as Nina was sentenced. I promised Esmeralda that we would find evidence to prove Nina's innocence. Later, Nina was exonerated, but she died. We felt so guilty. We wanted to avenge Nina's family, but we didn't have your courage. We're all very grateful you did what we couldn't."
"I think if Nina were still alive, she would be very grateful to you too." Bernice's eyes reddened slightly, but she said with a smile, "Nina wouldn't want you to avenge her. She'd want you to live well."
"Nina wouldn't want you to risk your life for revenge either," Cassie said, holding Bernice's hand. "You rarely talk about yourself, but I see a lot of sadness and coldness in your eyes. We can't help with your past, but in the future, cherish your life. You only get one life; don't waste it on anyone. We can take our time to get evidence against Megan and use the law to punish her. Everyone will know Megan's crimes, and no one can help her escape."
"Exactly. Killing Megan and losing your own life isn't worth it. We can die to save someone, but not for a scumbag like Megan," Laura also shouted indignantly, "Megan ruined my marriage, took my husband, and left my child without a father. Michael even broke my bone for Megan. But I still have hope. I always think I can't be sad because of Megan; it's not worth it. I want to live better."
"You deserve better," Bernice said, feeling a pang of heartache for her.
She understood the pain of being mistreated by someone she loved. "By the way, what will Michael do next?"
"Don't worry. The Jude Family is on my side. Michael won't call the police," Laura said, trying to smile. "This matter is over."
