Chapter 618
"You cooked too little," Joseph responded nonchalantly to Cassie as he took his seat, sampling a morsel of shrimp. Its sweetness and aroma were a delight, and he found himself unable to recall the last time he had indulged in such a gratifying meal.
Joseph was known for his modest appetite and discerning palate, often dismissing even the most renowned chefs. Yet, Cassie's homemade dishes had taken him by surprise with their exceptional flavor.
The creamy mushroom soup was equally enticing, and the seafood atop the Spanish rice was fragrant and harmonized perfectly with the slightly sticky grains.
Before long, Joseph had polished off the entire serving of seafood. Still unsatisfied, he proceeded to finish up all of the mushroom soup.
Cassie voiced her irritation, "Could you not have left some for me? I'm not done with my meal."
"I told you to cook more dishes, but you chose not to heed my words," Joseph retorted, spooning the last of the soup into his mouth. He dabbed at his slender lips with a napkin, adding, "I'm still hungry."
Joseph regarded Cassie thoughtfully, "In exchange for this meal, I'll return the Peace Group to you tomorrow. However, you must understand that this is not a result of your coercion."
"Hmph," Cassie responded with a disbelieving smile.
Joseph was irked by Cassie's derisive grin. "Also, I caution you to manage the company affairs with Megan appropriately. If I discover you mistreating her again, I won't be as lenient."
Having said his piece, Joseph rose and made his exit.
Upon reaching the door, he turned back, "Without my backing, the Peace Group is likely to falter soon. When that happens, I'll be waiting for you to come and beg me."
"I won't," Cassie retorted, maintaining her composed smile.
Joseph's eyes flashed with mockery as he departed without a backward glance, embodying the persona of a scoundrel who had just dined and was off to rendezvous with his mistress.
However, Cassie had long since relinquished her hopes for Joseph and remained indifferent.
She promptly dialed Charles, "The board meeting will proceed as planned tomorrow."
Upon exiting the residential area, Joseph climbed into the waiting car. The driver, Nathaniel, swiveled in his seat to relay, "The incident from three years ago has been investigated. It was Liam who bribed the hospital staff to fake Cassie's death."
"So, it was him," Joseph's eyes hardened, recalling the unease he had felt when Liam had unexpectedly appeared with Walter and Grandma.
"Take me back to the company," he instructed.
In the office of Hernandez's general manager, the door was flung open with a resounding crash. Liam, engrossed in his work, glanced up, but swiftly regained his composure upon recognizing the ominous figure of Joseph.
"Joseph, what's the matter..." Liam began, but was cut short as Joseph landed a fist on his face.
Caught off guard, Liam winced as a sharp pain radiated from the corner of his mouth, a single droplet of blood trickling down his chin.
The secretary outside the office sensed the brewing trouble and surreptitiously dialed Desmond's number.
"Joseph, don't assume that your control over Hernandez instills fear in me. I, too, am a child of Hernandez," Liam retorted, trembling with rage.
