Chapter 579

For a full week, Cassie had been persisting. Her strength was waning, her spirit flagging, but she held on. Nathaniel, ever the dutiful friend, would drive over to her place, helping her into his car and taking her to the hospital for her regular check-ups.

"Where's Joseph?" Cassie asked.

The question hung in the air, unanswered, as Nathaniel fell silent. The awkwardness was palpable, a tangible entity that filled the car.

Cassie laughed, a hollow sound that echoed in the silence. "I know," she said, her voice laced with a bitter humor. "He must be keeping company with Megan. Nothing is more important to him than Megan."

Nathaniel's eyes filled with sympathy and pity. " Cassie, please don't say that," he implored, his voice gentle. "I'm here for you."

Cassie opened her mouth to say something more, but her words died on her lips as she noticed two unfamiliar bodyguards approaching. She fell silent, her gaze fixed on the strangers.

As they made their way to the hospital, Nathaniel drove while Cassie sat alone in the back. The silence was broken only when Nathaniel spoke up. "I've been trying my best to please Megan these past few days," he confessed. "Joseph is finally starting to believe that I have no ill intentions towards him."

"Sorry for causing you so much trouble," Cassie murmured, her voice filled with regret. She hadn't expected Joseph to be suspicious of Nathaniel as well.

"Maybe it's because I spoke well of you in front of Joseph before," Nathaniel admitted softly. "He has been wary of me ever since." He paused, his gaze fixed on the road ahead. "Last time, you mentioned about having someone pretend that you had a miscarriage."
