Chapter 154

""Shut up, liar!"" Joseph Hernandez bellowed at her. ""You think I'd still believe you? All that talk about love, isn't it just a ploy to get me to fight your battles in court? After that's done, you want to kick me to the curb. You say you don't love Arthur Lewis anymore, but you couldn't wait to run off to a hotel with him.""

Cassie might have argued back in the past, but she was truly exhausted and disheartened today, too drained to even muster the energy for a fight. ""When did you see me go to a hotel with him?""

""Why didn't you come home then? Why are you wearing her clothes? Look at yourself right now.""
His gaze was filled with disgust.

Cassie felt a surge of anger, as if he thought her tarnished.
She ripped off the clothes she was wearing and tossed them onto the floor as if out of her mind, ""Take a good look for yourself, see if there are any marks on me!""

As she spoke, her emotions escalated, and tears began to fall like raindrops.
Cassie's crying left Joseph Hernandez utterly flustered, and out of irritation, he took off his clothes and covered her with them.

""Fine, even if you didn't do anything with Arthur Lewis, by not coming home and spending the night with some other man, you've shown you have no regard for our agreement, Cassie. I'll make sure you learn the cost of breaking a contract.""

""What are you going to do?""
Cassie glared at him with wide, angry eyes.

""From now on, you'll stay here. Don't bother going out to work, just to keep you from cheating again.""
Joseph Hernandez let out a cold snort and slammed the door shut, locking it.

Cassie didn't bother to knock; she was too tired.
She had lost the only family she had, and every day she had to put up with Joseph Hernandez's suspicions and hurt. There was no hope or future in sight for her.
Maybe it would be better to die — no more fears, no more worrying about how to repay Joseph Hernandez.

............

Joseph Hernandez expected her to scream and fight, or beg for forgiveness, but she was unusually quiet.
At noon, a staff member brought food in for her, but soon came out shaking their head. ""Mr. Hernandez, Miss Brooks won't eat. She seems a bit off.""

""She can go without food if she refuses to eat,"" he replied irritably, tossing the magazine aside.

""Mr. Hernandez, have you asked Miss Brooks what really happened? There might be a misunderstanding.""
The staff member couldn't stand to watch the young couple's spat continue. Both of them were too stubborn to back down or explain, always fussing over each other, even though it was clear Mr. Hernandez truly cared for his wife.

""What misunderstanding could there be?""
Joseph Hernandez, usually unflappable, felt a twitch of something in his chest. He couldn't ignore that she always appeared crisp and clean.

Rubbing his temples in frustration, after a moment's hesitation, he still called Walter over, ""Check into what they've been up to afterward.""

If they'd gone to a hotel... oh, Cassie, your life would be over.

Walter, struck speechless—just minutes ago, Joseph had insisted on not prying. Whatever. Next time, he'd just see things through from start to finish.

By three in the afternoon, Walter returned, a mix of regret and helplessness in his eyes. ""Mr. Hernandez, you've got it all wrong about Miss Brooks. Yes, she was with Arthur Lewis last night, but they were at the funeral home. Her grandmother passed away, and Arthur is an acquaintance of the Brooks family—he was just paying his respects.""

Stunned, Joseph shot to his feet, barely suppressing the urge to lash out, ""Why didn't you clarify this with me last night?""
