Chapter 265
"Panic ensued, and the doctor was promptly called into the room.
“The patient just came out of major surgery. Can you stop stressing him out? Do you want him to die or something?” The doctor snapped.
The room fell silent, with even Ms. Foster clamping her mouth shut in embarrassment.
David soon drifted off from exhaustion, and Ms. Foster glared at Cassie again with resentment simmering in her eyes.
A shadow of sadness was evident on her face. “Stop yelling at me. I’ll make it up to him. From now on, I’ll take care of his health, and even after he recovers, I’ll manage his diet until he gets married.”
“And what if he never gets married?”
“That won’t happen.”
Ms. Foster scoffed, “Who would marry a man with an incomplete set of organs? If his other kidney fails, he might not last long. Besides, it's not like any man would be willing to risk his life for you.”
Cassie remained silent for a good half-minute before she finally spoke in a hoarse voice, “Fine. I agree to get engaged to him.”
---
At a café.
Laura Miller nearly spilled her coffee when she heard the news. “Have you lost your mind? You’re repaying him with your whole life!”
“I owe him too much,” Cassie responded calmly, taking a bitter sip of her coffee. “Plus, the photos of us have spread everywhere. Everyone thinks there's something between us, and now he's saved my life with his kidney.”
Laura sighed, “David actually cares a lot about you. He’s always been quietly looking out for you. But you and Joseph...”
“It’s over between us,” Cassie said with a pained expression, holding back the fact that Joseph was part of the Hernandez family. They were worlds apart, separated by an ocean of differences, including their beliefs.
“Well, sometimes it’s better for a woman to be with a man who loves her than to keep chasing exhaustion,” Laura mused, reflecting on her own love life. “By the way, I'm planning to move to New York for work after the holidays.”
Cassie looked up in surprise. “That’s so sudden.”
“It’s not really sudden. Ocean Blue Group in New York offered me the position of lead formulator last year, but I couldn’t leave Benjamin, so I turned it down. They reached out again last month, and I accepted the offer yesterday.”
Laura gazed out the window with a wistful expression. “Staying in Madison, I keep thinking about Benjamin. I think it’ll be good for me to move on and maybe then, I can let go of that relationship.”
“That might be for the best,” Cassie concurred, suddenly feeling an emptiness. Her only friend was leaving. “I might head to Madison next year too, to expand Peace Group. I need to investigate my mother’s death.”
""You're right on the money. Your dad was a New Yorker too. I'll be waiting for you.""
---
Cassie was packing her bags in the evening when she opened her jewelry box and found the ""Diamond"" inside. In her haste earlier, she'd forgotten to check thoroughly and had accidentally taken it with her. Such a valuable item couldn't stay in her possession.
The following day, she drove back to the mansion, rang the doorbell, and waited, but no one answered.
""Don't bother ringing anymore. The owner's left Madison."" A man in a black suit appeared behind her.
""And you are?""
""I'm a real estate agent. I’m here to take a few photos for the online listing,"" he said with a smile. ""The owner wants to offload the mansion at a bargain price; given its prime location and great design, it's bound to sell quickly.""
