Chapter 278
"The image before her was sickening; she couldn't bear to look at it any longer. How could she have ever fallen for a man who would even consider a woman like Luna?
Finally, dinner time arrived. Cassie declared firmly, ""A bastard like myself certainly has no right to share a meal with Joseph. I'll just eat in the kitchen.""
Before anyone could respond, she was already on her way.
Joseph's face darkened, and Luna boasted, ""At least she knows her place.""
Leo clenched his jaw, no longer in the mood to speak.
The dinner was meticulously crafted by the kitchen staff at Vera's direction. Yet, after a few bites, Joseph lost interest.
Since the breakup with Cassie, his appetite had vanished, leaving him perpetually hungry.
""Is there something wrong with the meal, Joseph?"" Vera inquired cautiously.
""I filled up on fruits earlier. Please, go ahead without me. I'm going to the restroom.""
He stood and headed toward the kitchen, through which he needed to pass to get to the restroom. Upon entering, he saw Cassie sitting at a small table enjoying her meal heartily.
The sight of her eating so well, even as he spent time with another woman, stirred a sense of irritation within him. He strode over with a cold smirk, ""I suppose nothing in Madison could compare to such a feast, eh? You're acting like you've never seen food before.""
Cassie looked up at his infuriating face, with the bite of food stuck in her throat. ""Yeah, I've never had such luxury.""
With that, she deliberately spat out her mouthful of food toward his face.
""Cassie, you're playing with fire!"" Joe fumed, his neck bulging and his face flushed, speckled with the residual food and spit she had expelled.
""Sorry about that. I’m just a farm girl, uncouth and uneducated. I was never taught any manners,"" Cassie teased with a chuckle. ""But surely someone as high and mighty as yourself wouldn't stoop to my level. Right, Joe?""
Joe's anger twisted into a sardonic smile. ""You must be addicted to this act, Cassie. I'm warning you, get out of New York or I'll make sure you do. Just the sight of you makes my skin crawl.""
Every word he casually threw at her was like a blade cutting into her, but the more it hurt, the brighter Cassie's smile shone. ""Unfortunately for you, Joe, I don't think you have the authority to decide that. You're not exactly the president of Madison Enterprises, are you?""
""You think I don't know the president?"" Joe laughed arrogantly. ""I could have a word anytime I want.""
Cassie's brow furrowed in confusion. ""Why should I go anywhere? If seeing me makes you sick, that's your problem, not mine. I'm quite happy with my life.""
There was silence as Joe had half a mind to tear apart her thick-skinned facade; she'd fooled him once with that face.
""Aren't you supposed to be in the restroom, Joe? What are you doing?"" Luna entered briskly, having finished her meal. Noticing the two chatting under the dim light, both in grey, resembling a couple, she felt a shiver of alarm.
She grabbed Joe's arm possessively, as if afraid of losing her man to another.
Raising an eyebrow, Joe's demeanor darkened before he flashed a grin. ""I was on my way to the restroom, but Cassie here stopped me. She was trying to hit on me.""
""What?"" Luna's eyes popped with fury. ""Cassie, you're as shameless as your mother.""
