Chapter 1304 Giving Cassie Support

Cassie was totally mortified.

Yeah, that’s what she thought back then, but over the past few days, her mindset had done a 180, and getting called out like that made her feel gross.

Cassie was like, 'What did he mean by saying I wanted to be his girlfriend? He acted like he was some hotshot.'

A dude with constant mental issues—she was starting to find him super annoying, alright?

"You're overthinking it," Cassie snapped, giving him a death glare, "Are you even listening to me now?"

"Cassie, if you kissed me and made out with me before, and it wasn't because you wanted to be my girlfriend, then it was sexual harassment," Joseph shot back, "According to Madison's criminal law, once you hit a certain age, you're criminally responsible. Plus, the law now says guys have the same protection rights as girls in this stuff."

"You know criminal law?" Cassie raised an eyebrow at him.

"There are a ton of books on it in the study. I read a few," Joseph said, all proud of himself.

Cassie arched an eyebrow. After being with him for so long, she wasn’t totally clueless. "You wanna talk law? Fine. During the whole thing, did you resist? Did you pass out? Nope, you didn’t. In fact, you enjoyed it, so it doesn’t count as a crime."

"But my mental age was like two years old then. The doctor has a report on it. I didn’t resist, but your actions could be seen as tricking an innocent kid," Joseph shot back quickly.

Cassie was left speechless.

She had to admit, even with amnesia, Joseph was way better at this legal stuff than her.

But seeing his smug face, Cassie couldn’t help but get pissed. "Fine, if you think I committed a crime, go ahead and call the cops. Do whatever you want."

Joseph suddenly realized she was mad. He froze, quickly looked down, and said in a softer tone, "That’s not what I meant. I just don’t wanna sleep apart from you. Don’t think I don’t know. Michael told me that before my accident, we were a thing. Sophia is our daughter. I see that Sophia and Oliver are used to us sleeping together, which means we did it before my accident."

Cassie pursed her lips. There were some things she hadn’t told Michael not to say, so she wasn’t ready to hide them. It was only a matter of time before he found out.

"Cassie," Joseph held her hand nervously, "let me take care of you all, just like before."

"Do you love me?" Cassie suddenly looked up and asked.

Joseph was stunned.

Joseph thought, 'Love? What is love? I’m not sure.'

Joseph replied, "Cassie, I really wanna be with you."

Cassie said, "Joey, when you were first diagnosed with a mental age of two, I thought that if you stayed that way, I might stick with you in that state. I didn’t know how long I could last, maybe a few years, decades, or even a lifetime. But then I saw your intelligence was growing. You’d soon become a better person. You don’t remember the past, our love, or our struggles. Your memory has restarted, so you definitely wouldn’t remember loving me."

Cassie paused, feeling a bit down. "Joseph, you know, this isn't the first time you've been like this."

Joseph was floored and asked, "Have I lost my memory before?"

"Not exactly lost memory. During our marriage, you were always hanging out with your ex-girlfriend. You leaned on her and trusted her. We split up because of her. She messed with your head and wiped out all the good times we had, leaving only the bad stuff. That time was hell for me. We divorced, got back together, and then you ended up like this."

Joseph was speechless for a long time.

He wasn’t ready for such a messy past.

He’d only heard a quick rundown from Michael and had no clue the divorce was so complicated.

And he could tell Cassie still had some serious beef with him when she talked.

"Cassie, was I a burden to you before?" He finally seemed to get it.

"If I said no, I'd be lying." Cassie replied bitterly, "Your memory might never come back. You’ll have a new life. You shouldn’t be tied down by the past. Joseph, you rely on me now, want to sleep with me, maybe like a baby bird relies on its mom. I’m the first young woman you’ve been close to, so you have sexual feelings for me. It’s normal; it’s just your body reacting."

"I'm the father of the kids, so I gotta be responsible," Joseph said, all anxious.

"Of course, you gotta be responsible, but only for the kids. You can teach them to read, write, play ball, pay for their school, buy them clothes, and do all the dad stuff." Cassie nodded. She said softly, "I hope you go to work, get out there, make friends, and meet more women. Maybe then you'll figure out what your feelings for me really are. Remember, I don’t need you to be responsible for me. We’re divorced; no one’s responsible for anyone."

She turned around after speaking.

Even though she felt crushed and hurt, she also felt a weird sense of relief.

The confusion and fear of these days seemed to have lifted.

Joseph stared blankly at her back and suddenly said in a low voice, "Cassie, all that talk, it just means you don’t want to be with me anymore, right?"

"Joseph, I’m scared that after being with you, just when I finally see a glimmer of hope for the future, you’ll forget again. You’ve never given me enough security. I care about you, but every time, I’m the one left behind. You were like that before, and now you don’t even get what love is. How can I trust my future to you?"

Cassie finished and went downstairs to find the kids.

Joseph stood there for a long time and then went into another room.

He sat on the bed.

He replayed Cassie’s words in his head, and his heart felt like it was getting whipped.

But he didn’t blame Cassie, not one bit.

After all, he was a useless guy with memory issues who couldn’t even protect himself. He really couldn’t make Cassie happy.

He needed to become a seriously strong man.

He needed to be the one Cassie could count on.

He was dead set on it.
