Chapter 1033 Arthur's Final Warning

The next day, the funeral home held a service for Arthur.

Cassie stared at his body. It was shocking, but she wasn't scared—just deeply saddened that Arthur was gone so suddenly.

She thought, 'Why are humans so fragile?'

After the funeral, Cassie took three days off work. She didn't go anywhere.

On the fourth day, she got a call from an unknown number. "Cassie, it's Kayla."

"Kayla?" Cassie was confused. She thought Kayla might be causing trouble.

"I need to meet you. Don't tell anyone," Kayla said quietly.

Cassie was taken aback. She felt wary but relaxed when Kayla suggested meeting in a busy downtown spot.

Soon, she drove to a box of the café they agreed on.

Kayla was at the table, sunglasses and a hat beside her. She'd cut her hair short and wore heavy makeup, making her almost unrecognizable.

"What do you want to talk about?" Cassie asked, sitting across from her. Kayla had always seemed quiet but not bad. She knew about Cassie's past with Arthur but never showed jealousy. Even when Kathleen badmouthed her, Kayla never joined in.

"Look at this," Kayla said, handing over her phone.

Cassie saw a screenshot of an unsent text: [Be careful]

The message wasn't finished; there were letters being typed at the bottom.

The recipient was Cassie.

"This was the last screen on Arthur's phone. The police found it in the bushes after the incident. They didn't know the password. When I got the phone, I unlocked it and saw this."

Kayla looked at her with a complex expression. "I think Arthur realized something was wrong or knew he might not make it and wanted to warn you. But the car caught fire, and he didn't have time, so he threw the phone out the window."

Cassie's eyelashes trembled.

So, in Arthur's final moments, he might have been trying to warn her.

"Why it's a screenshot?" she asked suddenly. "Can you show me his phone?"

Kayla replied, "The phone was handed over to the police. Both the Lewis and Foster families saw it, but I was the first. After seeing it, I took a screenshot of the draft message and sent it to my phone, then deleted it from his."

Cassie was stunned.

Kayla frowned. "Have you thought about why Arthur wanted to send you this message in his final moments? It wasn't even a last will. What was he warning you about, or why did he contact you the day before?"

"I don't know," Cassie said quickly. "I hadn't been in touch with Arthur since the wedding. I was surprised when he contacted me that day. David said it might be because we had a fight the day before, and Arthur wanted to mediate."

After she finished speaking, Cassie stared at the screenshot.

She thought, "Be careful. Be careful of whom? When Arthur was typing, the letter D appeared. So, the person's name must start with D."

A thought flashed through her mind. Could he have meant David? Her face turned pale.

Kayla noticed her expression. "It seems you've guessed something."

"No, that can't be." Cassie shook her head.

'How could Arthur, in his final moments, warn her to be careful of David?'

Kayla said, "The person Arthur wanted you to be careful of has a name starting with D. He might have been typing David. That's why I deleted the draft."

Cassie understood. She looked at Kayla with a mix of admiration and complexity.

For the first time, she realized Kayla was very smart and calm. Maybe she had been too quiet, so people hadn't paid much attention to her.

"Don't you hate me?" Cassie suddenly asked. "Kathleen would love to kill me because Arthur had the accident on his way to see me. I caused your child to lose his father."

"Of course, I hate you." Kayla's face showed bitterness. "But Arthur once confessed to me that he had done many things to wrong you, hurt you, and let you down. He said he was a despicable person. Being with me was for benefits, but since he married me, he treated me well and didn't cheat on me. You were the person in his heart, but I was never jealous. I just wanted to be with Arthur."

Cassie was moved. She had to admit Kayla was broad-minded.

It was not easy for Arthur, after experiencing someone as vicious as Olivia, to meet someone like Kayla.

Kayla continued, "And I believe if it wasn't something very important, Arthur would have left a message for me in his final moments. I told you about the message because I wanted to fulfill Arthur's wish."

She smiled, but her eyes reddened.

"I'm sorry," Cassie apologized, feeling very sad.

"No need to apologize. The most important thing is, I think Arthur's death might not have been an accident but a murder." Kayla dropped another bombshell. "Because I checked the last video before the accident with the police. It shows the message was edited more than twenty seconds after the crash. Isn't that strange? Why didn't he send it before the accident? Did he realize something after the crash?"

"You mean after the crash, he realized someone wanted to harm him?" Cassie gasped in horror. "But David said the car's system malfunctioned."

"Some malfunctions can be controlled by humans," Kayla said quietly. "Did Arthur say anything when he called you?"

"He said it was something important and told me not to tell David." Cassie felt more and more terrified.

Kayla was silent for a long time before standing up. "Was he really trying to mediate between you and David? No one knows the truth. The only thing clear is that his car came out of the company. I think you should be careful and not tell anyone I came to see you."
