Chapter 1509 Am I That Important?
"You mean last night?" Derek had his hands in his pockets, looking completely at ease. "I was afraid my mom would scold me. She asked me to entertain some foreign guests yesterday, so I needed a good excuse. You were upset and wanted to drink, which was a perfect excuse. After all, it's quite troublesome for a girl to get drunk outside."
"So you had something important last night." Laura felt guilty. "Next time, don't do that. Entertaining guests is important."
"Forget it. I'd rather be with you than those foreign guests." Derek patted her head. "Don't overthink it. Just chat with the people my mom introduced, but don't rush into anything. If you have a good impression of someone, let me know first. I'll help you check their character. These people are good at hiding their true selves," Derek said.
"Okay." Laura trusted him and nodded, waving her hand. "I'm off to work. Bye."
Laura waved at him.
Derek watched her back and smiled. He treated Laura so well; he didn't believe she could get used to another man.
Shortly after arriving at the office, Laura received three friend requests on Facebook from strangers.
At the same time, Violet sent a message: [I recommended your Facebook to them. Add them first, and if they're not suitable, we can find others. No need to overwhelm you by exposing your screen name to all the candidates.]
Laura found it amusing. After accepting the requests, she immediately received messages from the men.
Laura chatted briefly with them and found that all three had impressive backgrounds.
The first was Rowan Montgomery, whose family owned a bank. He was thirty-two and unmarried.
The second was Cassian Vaughn, the nephew of the mayor of Whisperlyn City, currently working in the State Department. He was thirty and unmarried.
The third was Remy Donovan, the youngest physics professor at Madison University. He graduated from a top university and had published several papers internationally. He was thirty-one and had a brief marriage abroad but was now divorced.
"Your godmother picked some good men for you. They're all a few years older than you, which is nice."
Cassie leaned over her shoulder, curious and excited. "I'm a bit jealous of you."
Laura had nothing to say. Except for Remy, who had a child, the others were unmarried, which surprised her. Even many wealthy socialites found it hard to remarry into a better family after a divorce.
This was one of the perks of being the President's goddaughter.
But it also made Laura uncomfortable. "They're only interested in me because I'm the President's goddaughter. Otherwise, why would these unmarried men be interested in a divorced woman with a daughter?"
"That's not entirely true. You're pretty and young, which are your advantages. Get to know them first and see their character. If they're too opportunistic, then forget it." Cassie was curious. "Let's see their photos."
These men had notable backgrounds, so it was easy to find their photos online.
But after seeing them, Laura was a bit disappointed. "They're just average-looking."
Cassie twitched her mouth. "They're okay, all well-groomed. But if you compare them to Benjamin, Michael, or Derek, they definitely fall short. You have to understand, men who are capable, handsome, family-oriented, and understanding are rare."
Laura had nothing to say.
She had mingled in Whisperlyn City's elite circles. Despite Joseph and Lucas being handsome, many wealthy or noble men were either balding early or had big bellies. This was probably why Isla clung to Benjamin, who was indeed handsome. As for Michael, he was also good-looking, which was why Megan kept him as a backup.
Laura decided not to focus too much on looks.
Maybe a less handsome man would make her feel more secure.
So Laura chatted with them. But juggling conversations with three men while working was sometimes overwhelming, especially since the topics were often about what they were doing, their favorite foods, and hobbies.
Answering the same question for two people sometimes annoyed Laura.
Moreover, Rowan often bragged about his abilities and assets, Cassian subtly probed her relationship with the Presidential Palace, which felt too opportunistic. Remy was okay; they had some common ground in research, but compared to Derek, Remy lacked humor.
Laura compared Remy to Derek probably because she chatted with Derek every day.
Even when they weren't chatting, Derek would send her funny stuff, making her laugh out loud.
Laura sometimes wondered where Derek found so many jokes.
Christmas came quickly, and Remy asked Laura out. After some thought, she agreed.
Firstly, she wanted to enjoy the holiday atmosphere. Secondly, she wanted to start a new relationship, and meeting in person was the first step.
On Christmas Day, Laura wore a wine-red wool coat. Many people looked tacky in it, but her beauty made her look bright and charming.
When Derek saw her as he was leaving in the morning, he was momentarily stunned and had a bad feeling. "You dressed up so nicely today. Do you have a date?"
"I have dinner plans with Remy," Laura said openly.
Derek's face stiffened slightly. "Didn't you say he was dull?"
"Yes, but dull people are honest. I'll meet him first. It's not like I'm dating him." Laura smiled. "I need to meet him to know what kind of person he is."
"I see." Derek sighed. "Alright, I was going to invite you and Maeve out for Christmas. Looks like it'll just be me and Maeve. I'll go home early to play with Maeve."
Laura felt guilty seeing his unhappy face. It was like they were both lonely people, and she suddenly left him alone. "If you had told me earlier, I wouldn't have agreed to Remy's date. Now that I've agreed, I can't back out."
"Am I that important?" Derek suddenly looked up with a expectant face.
Laura blushed even more and reassured him, "Of course, you're much more important than Remy."
