Chapter 113
""......""
Cassie was surrounded by a sea of microphones, leaving no way out.
She tried to speak up, to explain, but nobody would listen; instead, they kept jostling her, and in her high heels, she was easily shoved to the ground.
The reporters didn't help her up; they just circled around, snapping unflattering photos.
""Back off, what are you doing?"" Arthur Lewis roared as he made his way through, hustling to lift Cassie off the floor. ""Cassie, are you okay?""
Cassie, seeing Arthur's approach, sensed that things would only get worse. Sure enough, the reporters perked up even more.
""It's Arthur Lewis! Looks like he made it here in no time.""
""These two have definitely been involved all along.""
""Disgusting!""
The crowd's comments turned uglier, and Arthur's temper flared. "" Watch your mouth! None of this has anything to do with her. If anyone's irresponsible, it's me. I've wronged Cassie, not Olivia Brooks.""
""Of course you'd defend Cassie since you're smitten with her.""
""Poor Olivia Brooks.""
""Yeah, cursed to have a sister like that.""
Cassie was on the verge of exploding in anger at Arthur, who was only adding fuel to the fire at the worst possible time.
Instead of escaping, they found themselves trapped even tighter.
In the chaos, security rushed in to keep the reporters at bay.
David squeezed through the gap they created and saw Cassie with her hair all disheveled. Pointing at the reporters with a steely glare, he barked:
""Is this an interview or an interrogation? Or perhaps you're just bullying a defenseless woman? Do you even deserve to call yourselves journalists?""
The crowd, taken aback by his commanding presence and obviously expensive attire, didn't dare to push forward.
Still, someone protested, ""We just want to clear up the nature of their relationship.""
""They have no relationship,"" David said emphatically, pulling Cassie to his side. ""She's my girlfriend, and if any of you hassle her again, you'll answer to me.""
Arthur Lewis was taken aback.
Cassie was stunned, her mind racing with the worst - if Joseph Hernandez found out, would she be branded with the scandal of an affair within marriage?
David thought she was petrified, standing immobile, so he gently guided her to the car with a comforting arm around her shoulder.
Arthur Lewis hurried to follow them, and only when settled in the car, he shot out anxiously, ""Uncle, are you guys actually seeing each other?""
David glanced helplessly at Cassie. ""I'm game whenever she's ready. What happened before was just an excuse to clarify the misunderstanding about you two."" He turned to Cassie, ""Sorry about that. Would it bother you?""
Cassie was silent. How could she admit it bothered her? She was a married woman after all. But he had only meant well.
She simply shook her head, ""I understand.""
Breathing a sigh of relief, Arthur Lewis realized it was just a ruse. ""Cassie, I—""
""Don't call me that; it sickens me,"" Cassie snapped, her frustration rising just at the sight of him.
""Arthur Lewis, are you trying to do me in? You know there's been nasty speculation about our relationship, and still, you came looking for me. What, are the rumors not harsh enough? Was I indebted to you in another life that you keep causing me trouble?""
""I... I didn't mean to.""
Faced with her accusations, Arthur Lewis was at a loss for words. He might have got mad in the past, but now, all he could think about was her kindness and Olivia Brooks's cruelty.
""I came to apologize,"" he explained, ""Seeing you cornered, I feared for your safety and lost control... Cassie, I'm sorry, really sorry. I was a fool to be deceived by Olivia Brooks. Only now I realize you've always been the one who truly cared for me.""
