Chapter 414
"Don't worry, I'm not drawing any hasty conclusions," Cassie interjected with a serene demeanor. "At this moment, my entire focus is on Dad."
Unbeknownst to him, she had long since been cognizant of Megan Ray's existence. Megan Ray, a figure deeply embedded in his heart, was a fact Cassie had come to understand. Therefore, she felt no pain. She had already experienced it. Harboring bitterness served no purpose. After all, those who still drew breath could never rival those who had passed.
"Right, that's good," Joseph responded, a heavy sensation settling in his heart. He was afraid of her misconstruing his intentions, yet her indifference stirred a sense of unease within him. Was it due to her lack of love for him that she didn't worry? He observed her from behind as she cared for her father, a feeling of restlessness slowly creeping back into his heart. He stepped outside to smoke a couple of cigarettes.
Upon his return half an hour later, he found Cassie giving Leo some water. She glanced up at the sound of the door opening, then promptly returned to her task. A pang of discomfort hit Joseph; he had been away for a while, yet she hadn't bothered to inquire about his whereabouts. Her detachment gnawed at him. However, considering Leo's condition, he chastised himself for feeling unsettled.
Clearing his throat, he initiated the conversation with a resolute yet soothing tone. "I just spoke with Lucas and asked him to arrange for the best caregivers to look after your father. He's also reaching out to some of the top doctors abroad to discuss his condition..."
"Thank you," Cassie responded, her gratitude palpable.
"There's no need for thanks. You're my wife; it's my duty," Joseph grumbled, displeased with her formal demeanor. "But with you fighting for your father’s care, do you suspect Vera has something up her sleeve?"
Cassie nodded, suspicion lacing her voice. "Yes, I think she might be aware of the thirty-five percent of the shares Dad left me. With someone like Vera, driven by selfishness, and with Clark backing her... they'd stop at nothing to protect their interests."
"Indeed," Joseph agreed, nodding in affirmation. "I've already set people on the task of investigating the car accident."
Cassie fell into contemplation for a moment. "There's someone else though, who gives me an odd feeling."
"Who?"
"Atlas. When I was fighting for guardianship over my father, Vera was staunchly opposed until Atlas intervened with just a few words, and suddenly, she agreed. Plus, I feel like he's always subtly manipulating conversations in Vera's favor. When I first went to Leo's Family Restaurant, he directed certain topics at me in a focused manner. He doesn't say much, but there’s more to him than meets the eye."
Upon finishing her thought, Cassie noticed Joseph staring intently at her.
"What? Is there something on my face?" She brushed her cheek with her hand.
"No, it's just that I've noticed you've become sharper," Joseph said, pinching her cheek affectionately, "worthy of the woman I fell for."
Cassie rolled her eyes, not in the mood for flirtation.
"I just couldn't help but compliment you," Joseph said, retracting his hand and adopting a serious demeanor once more. "You know, I hadn't paid much attention, but Atlas really does fly under the radar. I heard he was born with a disability, a limp from birth. People at Leo's always coddled him. Even as he grew up, he lived under your father's and Leo's protection, never marrying."
"Why is that, not feasible?" Cassie blurted out.
Joseph took a moment to digest her words, then responded with a hint of irritation, "Is it appropriate for a lady to discuss someone else's personal matters?"
