Chapter 940 Despair
"I won't tell anyone, okay?" Sophia put on an obedient look. "Phoebe, I'll listen to you from now on as long as you're willing to play with me."
"Alright, I don't have any friends right now, so I'll reluctantly play with you." Phoebe nodded, thinking Sophia was silly, almost like a follower.
Little did she know, after dinner, as soon as Sophia walked out of the Chamberlain family gate, she told Liam everything she had coaxed out of Phoebe.
"Her Uncle Grandpa's child," she said.
Liam's face changed the moment he heard it. The "Uncle Grandpa" Phoebe mentioned could only be Larry or Marcus. Larry had two children, the elder Felix and the younger Andrew Chamberlain, who was currently studying abroad.
That Scott was most likely an illegitimate child of either Marcus or Larry.
But Larry's wife was a very fierce woman. If Larry had an illegitimate child outside, she would never tolerate him bringing the child back to the Chamberlain family.
So, Scott was most likely Marcus's illegitimate child.
His heart grew cold. No wonder Marcus rarely cared about him; he had another son outside.
Today, Marcus had repeatedly claimed that he was his only son, and he had almost deceived Liam.
The more Liam thought about his father, the more terrifying Marcus seemed.
Mabel had sacrificed so much for him, even providing over a billion dollars to the Chamberlain family for turnover three years ago. Yet Marcus had a woman and an illegitimate child outside. If Mabel found out, she would probably go crazy with anger.
Fortunately, Sophia's words had calmed him down. If he had really leaked information of the Hernandez family's chip, the Chamberlain family might really become the top family in Silverwood, but he would only become Marcus's sacrificial pawn.
But how could he warn Mabel about this?
"Sophia, don't tell anyone about this for now," Liam instructed, fearing that Mabel couldn't handle the shock.
That evening, Liam called Marcus.
"Dad, I can't do what you asked me to this afternoon. I think if we are to win, it should be through legitimate means. The Chamberlain family is already doing quite well. Why are you so obsessed with being first?" Liam said.
"Liam, you really disappoint me." Marcus's low voice was filled with a cold indifference.
"Dad, a person must have principles," Liam pleaded sorrowfully. "You already have enough. Besides, without the support of the Hernandez family, the Chamberlain family wouldn't be where it is today."
"Shut up! Soft-hearted and weak-willed, you'll never achieve greatness. No wonder you can never beat Joseph. You're destined to be like this." Marcus hung up the phone abruptly.
Liam's mouth was filled with bitterness. He had a gut feeling that since Marcus couldn't get through to him, he might try another approach. He had to keep a close watch on the company's internal personnel.
Far away on a foreign island, Cassie counted the days every day. Unknowingly, half a month had passed.
Although she didn't have to do anything during this half-month, and Joseph took care of her carefully, serving tasty food and drinks every day, she still lost weight.
The main reason was that the days were too oppressive. Additionally, she was already married, yet she spent every day with Joseph, making her feel deeply guilty towards David.
One day, Joseph took her out to sea to fish.
"Cassie, look, I caught a cod. How about I make pan-fried cod for you tonight?" Joseph quickly came over with a plump fish, his handsome face flashing a pleasing smile.
"Whatever, I'm not interested." Cassie got up and walked to the other side, her attitude cold and indifferent.
Joseph sighed as he watched her back. At that moment, his phone rang.
It was Owen, his voice trembling with excitement. "Mr. Hernandez, the Purple Chip has been successfully developed."
"Is that so?" Joseph nodded lightly. "Well done."
Owen was embarrassed. "Mr. Hernandez, aren't you excited at all? You've invested over a billion dollars into this tiny chip, and it's the most advanced chip in the world. No company can surpass it. I estimate the Hernandez family's market value will at least triple."
"I understand," Joseph replied calmly. "You can release the news about the chip's successful development. We'll hold a press conference in half a month, and I'll attend."
"When will you be back?" Owen asked urgently. "Once the news gets out, it will definitely attract top companies from other fields to collaborate with us. The company urgently needs you to oversee things. Besides, this matter is of great importance. From publicity to collaboration, please handle it personally."
Joseph glanced complicatedly at Cassie in the distance and lowered his voice. "I don't have time right now. We spent so much money hiring the executives. It's time they played their roles well now."
"Alright," Owen answered helplessly. His boss was a man of deep affection. "What about the chip's related data?"
"I'll have Wyatt personally send someone to protect the lab. You should stay in the lab these days," Joseph instructed.
After all, this matter was enough to attract global attention, and some extreme competitors might even harm Owen.
"Okay," Owen replied.
After ending the call with Owen, Joseph called Wyatt. He didn't deliberately avoid Cassie.
On the island, it was just the two of them, and his voice giving orders to Wyatt drifted intermittently into Cassie's ears.
The more she listened, the more panicked she became.
She hadn't expected the Hernandez family's cutting-edge chip to be developed so quickly, and she couldn't imagine how much the family's market value would soar once it was launched.
In the future, not just in Silverwood but globally, there would be no one who could rival Joseph.
Her heart was filled with despair. Would she never be able to escape or avoid Joseph in this lifetime?
"Cassie, you're about to become the woman of the world's richest man." Joseph suddenly hugged her tightly from behind, his hand resting on her lower abdomen. "Our child will be more noble than any prince or princess."
Cassie glanced at him weakly. "I don't care about these things."
"Cassie, I'm just telling you that leaving me and going back to David is impossible. David isn't qualified to compete with me. Crushing him would be like crushing an ant," Joseph stated.
He forcibly turned her frail shoulders around and bit her tender lower lip.
Cassie really didn't know what to say. Sometimes, she wondered if she should give up. After all, with her abilities, she really couldn't escape Joseph.
But the hatred in her heart made her unyielding.
In the blink of an eye, another ten days passed.
In the morning, on the messy bed.
Joseph woke up first. Cassie was still asleep beside him, exhausted from the previous night's ordeal.
Joseph carefully tucked the blanket around her. As he got up, he suddenly noticed bloodstains on his leg.
