Chapter 430
Joseph met the challenge with a derisive snort. "After all the time he's spent working under me, if he can't handle this, he's of no use to me."Walter and Lucas lapsed into silence, their minds reluctantly conceding to the fact that his wife was indeed the most formidable of them all, an unmatched heroine.----------The press conference stretched on for a grueling three hours. When it finally came to a close, Cas Cassie retreated to the sanctuary of a limousine, which whisked her away to a beachside villa.
The driver swung open the door and she stepped out onto the lush lawn, where Joe was lounging by the poolside. He was casually dressed in a white shirt and soft lounge pants, his shirt untucked in a rare departure from his usual meticulous attire, lending him an air of relaxed nonchalance.A gentle sea breeze stirred, causing his shirt to ripple and his raven-black locks to sway across his forehead. In that moment, he seemed to shed years, resembling the youthful college Joe she once knew: pure, fresh-faced, save for his almost translucent pallor.Cas Cassie felt a warmth spread through her heart. She approached him, her long lashes fluttering upwards as she spoke, “I’m sorry, I disclosed your medical history to the public. Are you angry with me?”Joe ruffled her hair affectionately, pulling her into his embrace, “My girl, you're becoming more and more formidable.”“You... you’re not upset?” Cas Cassie blinked in surprise. “I thought you’d be concerned about others knowing about your condition.”“As long as you don’t leave me, nothing else matters,” Joe said, his hands cupping her face as he gazed intently into her eyes. "Are you truly prepared to stay by my side through all of this?”“Yes,” Cas Cassie nodded emphatically.“I'm not sure when or if I’ll recover, and I’ve hurt you before. I’m afraid I might lose control again,” a flicker of anxiety and pain shadowed Joe’s eyes.“Joey, as long as you’re willing to fight this, I won't give up on you,” Cas Cassie said, her voice resolute, her lip caught between her teeth. “Let's start a family.”Joe was taken aback, “But you didn’t want to before?”“I talked to Lucas about your condition. Deep down, you yearn for a home, Joey. A child will make our bond truly complete,” Cas Cassie’s gaze softened, “and I believe a baby will help you move past the painful memories.”“Baby, thank you,” Joe said, hugging her tightly, his eyes narrowing playfully, “So... shall we start trying for a baby right now?”Cas Cassie pinched his waist with feigned annoyance, “In broad daylight, shameless! I haven't even had lunch yet, let go.”“How about after lunch?” he teased.“Joseph, enough already. I spent all night poring over data; I'm exhausted,” Cas Cassie shot him a faux glare.“Sorry you’ve been working so hard, honey,” Joe said, his voice tinged with sympathy.“Apologies don’t help. Rub my shoulders while I eat lunch,” she commanded, striding towards the house.“What did you say?” Joe was taken aback. Was she really bossing him around now?“What, I can’t ask?” Cas Cassie shot him a plaintive look. “I've been up all night for you, and my head is still aching from all that data.”Seeing the redness in her eyes, Joe found himself at a loss for words. As they entered the dining room and swapped their shoes for slippers, Rosalind brought out the warm meal. Cas Cassie glanced over her shoulder at the man behind her, "You serve me."Joseph shot her a dark glare, "I'm a patient right now.""Are your hands broken? Are your legs crippled?" Cas Cassie blinked and gave him a once-over. "Doesn't seem like it."Joseph couldn't shake off the suspicion that this woman was exacting some sort of revenge for a past transgression."Rosalind, I'll do it." Rosalind, taken aback by the couple's antics, moved to serve the food."Rosalind, don't bother, this is part of our marital bliss," Cas Cassie said, propping her chin in her hands and shooting Joseph a playful look with her bright eyes.Joseph felt his heart soften under her gaze, "Fine, I'll go."
