Chapter 571
"Nathan, I must ask, is David Laura's lover or yours?" Nathan's smirk was as cold as ice. " Cassie, it seems you've been engaging in clandestine affairs behind my brother-in-law's back."
"Nathan, you vile creature!" Cassie's voice was laced with venom. "I've already alerted the authorities. Breaking and entering, assault - these are crimes, and I won't let you walk away unscathed."
"Heh, go ahead, call them," Nathan retorted, his expression a mix of indifference and arrogance. "My brother-in-law, Joseph, is a member of the esteemed Hernandez family. He'll surely come to my rescue. After all, I've been in similar situations before, and each time, he's managed to save me without a scratch." His constant reference to Joseph as 'brother-in-law' was a thinly veiled jab at Cassie's relationship with him.
Nathan's smugness sent a wave of rage coursing through Cassie.
Just as she was about to explode, the police stormed in, swiftly apprehending Nathan and his accomplices.
David and Laura were promptly rushed to the hospital.
As the ambulance sped through the night, Cassie's phone buzzed incessantly, calls flooding in from the Hernandez family, including Joseph.
Cassie picked up Joseph's call, only to be met with his furious tirade. " Cassie, have you lost your mind? Driving recklessly at night, crashing into my mansion's gate? If anything happens to my children, I swear, I'll make you pay."
"Joseph, do you even care for your children?" Cassie snapped back, her patience worn thin. "Do you know why I left? It's because Nathan invaded my friend's home and assaulted her in the dead of night. Your constant leniency has emboldened this scum. Joseph, I despise you. I loathe you. Do you understand?"
Cassie's words hung heavy in the air, her tears streaming down like pearls from a broken necklace.
She buried her face in her hands, her sobs echoing through the ambulance.
David, weakly lying on the hospital bed, clutched her hand tightly, his eyes filled with concern.
Cassie ended the call, her cries reverberating in the confined space.
She was filled with regret, more than she had ever felt before.
She should have never let her guard down with Joseph, should have never fallen for him.
His repeated leniency had brought harm to Laura, to David, and to Nina.
If it weren't for her pregnancy, she would have done everything in her power to end Nathan's life that very night.
Hours later, in the hospital, the doctor emerged from the emergency room. "The female patient, Laura, was not subjected to sexual assault, but she has sustained multiple injuries and a concussion. She was also drugged. It may take more than ten hours for her to regain consciousness."
Cassie breathed a sigh of relief, grateful that Nathan's vile intentions had been thwarted. She couldn't bear to think of the trauma Laura would have had to endure otherwise.
"And the male patient?" she asked anxiously.
"He has a knife wound on his arm, damaging the tendons. He'll need surgery, followed by a month in a plaster cast. Full recovery will take at least six months."
"Please proceed with the surgery immediately."
Cassie paid the necessary fees and accompanied Laura back to her ward.
Laura lay unconscious, her once radiant face now marred by bruises and swelling, her lips cracked and dry.
Soon, the police arrived to gather evidence of the assault.
By the time Cassie had given her statement, it was already two in the morning.
Exhausted and dizzy, Cassie sank into a chair, her strength failing her.
Suddenly, a shadow loomed over her. Joseph stood before her, his eyes as dark and unfathomable as the night outside.
Joseph looked down at Cassie, his mind echoing with her words from the phone call, "I hate you, I hate you."
