Chapter 1262: "Don't go, I'm scared."
Cassie had no choice but to spill the beans about how Megan messed with Joseph's treatment three years ago.
She and Joseph had planned to let it slide, but they didn't see Megan teaming up with David coming.
Mabel was floored, "No wonder Joseph suddenly wanted to ditch you and marry Megan back then. I thought he still had a thing for her."
"It's all on me. I never should've let Megan treat him in the first place," Lucas said, kicking himself.
"Don't beat yourself up. It's not your fault. If I had stepped up as a mom back then, Megan wouldn't have had the chance to pull that stunt," Mabel said, feeling guilty too. "She said she loved Joseph. What a load of crap. If she really loved him, she wouldn't have turned him into a fool just because she couldn't have him."
"I'll get someone on her trail right away," Cameron said, dead serious.
"We got no proof. No one saw Megan at Isaac's place last night. I bet David's secretary was actually her in disguise. She cut the power and drew the curtains just to hypnotize Joseph for treatment. David's got Ralph as his alibi," Cassie said, regretting not going with Joseph last night.
"So what now?" Cameron, usually the calm one, lost his cool, "Are we just gonna let Joseph stay a fool?"
His voice got louder, and Joseph, who was sucking his finger, got scared and started crying again, "This man is scary."
"Don't be scared. I'm here. He won't hurt you. He's just mad at the bad people," Cassie quickly patted his back and comforted him.
Cameron was torn up inside.
"Cameron, I'll reach out to top neurologists and psychologists abroad. Joseph's my good friend, and I'll do everything I can to help him," Lucas said.
"Lucas, you gotta find a way. Joseph's too smart and proud to end up like this," Mabel said, tears streaming down her face.
Mabel had two sons, one lost at sea and the other turned into a fool.
Mabel couldn't handle this reality.
But Joseph seemed clueless about their sadness. After crying for a bit, he looked up with his innocent eyes and said to Cassie, "I'm hungry."
Cassie almost wanted to cry but managed to say gently, "What do you want to eat?"
"I want milk," Joseph said, his lips trembling. His eyes were still wet with tears, looking just like Sophia when she said she was hungry.
If Sophia and Oliver said they wanted milk, it would be normal, but Joseph was a grown man.
However, Joseph's mental age was only two now.
"Okay, I'll get you some milk," she forced a smile, but as she stood up, Joseph grabbed her skirt.
"Don't go. I'm scared," he said, glancing fearfully at Cameron and Mabel.
Mabel smiled bitterly, "Alright, you stay with him. I'll go get some milk."
Luckily, there was a convenience store downstairs. Mabel bought a carton of milk. Joseph bit the straw and drank happily.
Mabel and Cameron felt their hearts shatter. They exchanged a look, and finally, Mabel walked over to Cassie, "Cassie, we don't know when Joseph will get better, maybe never."
"Don't talk like that," Cassie cut her off, even though she was just as lost.
Joseph's brain wasn't hurt; it was like a computer with all its files scrambled. His smarts had regressed. Lucas said he'd do his best, but she knew the odds were slim. If it were easy to fix, Joseph would've already tried to get his memories back.
Mabel looked at her sadly, "You and Joseph have been through so much to get here. We were so happy to see you guys reconcile and have kids. Right now, I'm kinda glad you and Joseph didn't remarry. Even though you're together, you're not his wife. It's not your job to take care of him; it's our responsibility as his parents."
"What are you getting at?" Cassie asked, though she already had a hunch.
"Cassie, if you're tired and want to leave, you can. We won't ask you to take care of Joseph. He's a fool now, and no one knows how long it'll last, maybe years, maybe forever," Mabel said, wiping her tears. "You're still young."
"Please stop. I can't leave Joseph like this. I don't know how long I can hold on, but I won't leave now. I'll stay and take care of him," Cassie said, looking at Joseph who was drinking milk. "Yeah, he's a fool now, but maybe he'll get better. No matter what, I'll try to make him fall in love with me again. Even if there's no future, I won't regret it."
Mabel was stunned, her eyes filled with gratitude, "Thank you. Joseph is lucky to have met you in this life."
"You and Mr. Cameron should rest," Cassie said.
"No, you go home. Sophia and Oliver must be waiting for you. I'll stay tonight," Cameron said, but as he approached, Joseph saw him and started to pout in fear. Cameron felt helpless.
"Forget it. He's scared of you. I'll stay with him. Sophia and Oliver are worried about him. You can bring the kids over tomorrow," Cassie said with a bitter smile. She felt pity seeing Joseph like this.
Cameron was angry, "The kids can't see him like this."
"But there's no choice. The kids are worried, and we can't hide it for long," Cassie said helplessly.
After Cassie persuaded Cameron and Mabel to leave, Joseph finally relaxed.
He yawned and said to Cassie, "I need to pee."
Cassie almost fell over. She regained her footing and felt embarrassed, "You can go by yourself. The bathroom is over there."
"I don't wanna move. I can't take off my pants," Joseph squirmed, pouting.
Cassie felt at a loss for words. Fortunately, Joseph was handsome, or it would have been even more awkward.
"Carry me," Joseph stretched out his hands childishly.
Cassie was silent.
How could she carry him?
"No need to carry. You can use this," Cassie said weakly and took out a container from the bed.
"What's this? It looks fun," Joseph's clean eyes lit up as if he had found an interesting toy.
