Chapter 709
Shortly after, a group of burly men ransacked the house, destroying everything in sight before departing, content with their havoc.
About five minutes after they left, the suitcase was finally opened from the inside.
Oliver crawled out with a pale face, his eyes red as he awkwardly lifted Sophia, who was covered in blood.
"Oliver, it hurts so much..." Sophia looked at him drowsily, still holding a bag of snacks in her hand.
"Sophia, don't be afraid. I'll take you to the hospital right away." Oliver, usually calm and indifferent, was now frantic with tears streaming down his face.
Carrying Sophia on his back, Oliver ran while dialing 911 on his watch before calling Sie, "Mom, Sophia is injured."
"What?!"
Upon hearing Oliver's words, just as she arrived at the hospital, Sie's heart sank. "How did it happen? Is it serious?"
"Mom, I'll tell you later. Sophia passed out; I just called an ambulance. I'm taking her to the hospital right away." Oliver's choked voice came through.
Sie knew Oliver's character too well. If it weren't serious, Oliver wouldn't be in this state.
A wave of panic washed over her, almost making her lose her balance.
As Sie hurried to the emergency room of another hospital, Oliver stood alone in the corridor, his small body covered in blood.
Upon spotting Sie, Oliver burst into tears and flung himself into her embrace.
"Mom, it's all my fault; I shouldn't have hidden Sophia in the suitcase."
"Don't cry, what happened?" Sie wiped the blood off Oliver's face, feeling heartbroken.
"Not long after you left, a few people broke into the house. I hid with Sophia in the suitcase. They didn't find us, but when someone started smashing things in the house, they hit the suitcase with a steel rod, hitting Sophia's head."
Oliver cried, tears and snot streaming down his face. "Sophia was too scared to make a sound, and when they left, I brought her out."
Rage coursed through Sie, causing her to tremble.
Sie never imagined someone would dare to break into her home like this.
She couldn't bear to think what would have happened if Oliver hadn't reacted quickly. Tonight could have been a disaster for the two kids.
She felt a mix of heartache and guilt. The children had just returned, and she, as a mother, had failed to protect them.
Sophia, who was so delicate and afraid of pain, how did she endure hiding in the suitcase?
Tears brimmed in Sie's eyes in an instant.
"Mom, it's all my fault. I should have turned off the lights. I was useless. I didn't protect my sister." Oliver gritted his teeth, his eyes filled with guilt and resentment, hating his helplessness.
"Oliver, don't blame yourself. You did great. Keeping the lights on was the right decision."
Sie held his small shoulders. "Those people must have been watching downstairs. They knew the lights were on in our house. If you suddenly turned off the lights, they would have known someone was hiding, and they would have found out about you and Sophia in the suitcase. Both of you would have been hurt."
"Mom, who are they? Who's so evil?" Oliver asked with hatred, leaning against her, "I'll avenge Sophia."
"You're too young. Mom will avenge her." Sie narrowed her eyes, determined not to let anyone who harmed Sophia get away.
At that moment, a doctor came out. "The child has lost a lot of blood, but our hospital is in urgent need of AB blood type. Are you the child's mother, and do you have AB blood type?"
"I don't." Sie's face turned grim.
Oliver rolled up his sleeve. "Mom, I can..."
"No, you're too young to donate," the doctor interrupted him. "The patient needs at least 500 milliliters of blood. Even adults struggle with that amount, and a child would not withstand it. What about the child's father...?"
