Chapter 563
"Leave," Joseph commanded, his attention already returning to the open notebook on his desk as he dismissed Nathaniel with a wave of his hand.
Nathaniel found himself caught in a whirlpool of frustration and confusion. The evidence, stark and undeniable, lay sprawled out before them. Yet, it was as if Joseph had suddenly misplaced his moral compass, his sense of right and wrong seemingly evaporated into thin air.
This unfamiliar facet of Joseph was disconcerting. It was as though he had metamorphosed overnight into an entirely different person. Nathaniel acknowledged that Joseph had once harbored feelings for Megan, but he had also discerned a special place for Cassie in Joseph's heart. The more he pondered over this puzzling situation, the more his discomfort grew.
Later that day, Nathaniel found himself at the estate. Since her return from Hernandez Corporation that morning, Cassie had been ensconced on the balcony, her gaze lost in the silent world beyond the window.
Upon Nathaniel's entrance, Cassie turned to him, her eyes brimming with sadness. "What message has Joseph sent me through you this time? Or has he finally lost his patience and sent you with divorce papers?"
" Cassie, you've misunderstood," Nathaniel began, hesitating before continuing, "Joseph isn't aware that I'm here. I know he's been acting out of character recently, but I don't believe it's intentional. He's... different."
"Do you think Megan might have done something to him during his treatment?" Cassie questioned, her voice barely above a whisper.
Nathaniel paused before replying, his expression complex. "I can't be certain, but it's as if Joseph has been brainwashed. He had asked me to investigate the ashes of Nina's mother. Logically, he should've harbored some doubts about Megan, but when the results came in, he seemed indifferent. That's not like him. He may have loved Megan once, but not to this extent."
"And previously, Joseph would avoid Megan whenever possible. Even at the recent gathering with Michael and others, he didn't attend. His sudden emotional attachment to Megan is... peculiar," Nathaniel elaborated.
Cassie's already pale face grew even more ashen. "I've noticed some changes too. Rosalind mentioned that Joseph seemed different after Megan's treatment yesterday. That's why I mustered the courage to confront him at the company today."
Nathaniel felt a sinking sensation in his heart. His suspicions were likely correct. " Cassie, I believe someone's tampering with Joseph's mind. Don't take his harsh words to heart. He still cares for you. As his personal assistant, I can sense it."
"But what can I do? He despises me now," Cassie replied, her smile tinged with sadness. "All I received when I confronted him was humiliation and hatred."
Nathaniel, filled with worry, responded, " Cassie, I don't understand why Joseph has changed so drastically, but remember, you're his wife, and he's the father of your child. Do you really want him to continue down this path?"
Cassie shook her head, her expression one of confusion. "Of course not, but you must understand, Joseph holds the reins of the entire Hernandez family now. Even if others in the family believe me, Joseph won't. He wields immense power. What can we possibly change? The elders are too old, and both Michael and Lucas trust Megan implicitly. They won't help me."
Nathaniel's heart sank further, forced to admit the truth in Cassie's words. " Cassie, I never imagined Megan could become this menacing. Consider how she might treat your children if she continues to stay with Joseph."
At this, Cassie clenched her teeth, her mind swirling with fear and uncertainty.
