Chapter 206
"Joseph's handsome face tensed, and he averted his gaze. ""Don't jump to conclusions.""
""No, answer me."" Cassie's heart ached as she saw his reaction. She turned off the stove and pouted, ""If you didn't answer me, I wouldn't make spaghetti for you.""
""I've only been with one person,"" Joseph said, bewildered by her intense jealousy.
""You're still hung up on her, aren't you? Look at you, even your complexion changes when she's mentioned.""
Cassie rambled on, her mood soured as if she had swallowed a fly.
""She passed away,"" Joseph said, furrowing his brow.
Cassie was taken aback, suddenly at a loss for words. ""I'm so sorry.""
""Let's not dwell on the past. You dated Arthur Lewis, didn't you?"" Joseph's reminder had a biting edge.
Speechless, Cassie quietly turned the stove back on, resuming her cooking.
Joseph slipped the card back into her pocket and left the house.
Cassie belatedly remembered she had asked him to chop onions. He had just walked out on her. Jerk. Slacker.
After dinner, Cassie insisted that he bring out their agreement. Joseph, unable to put up with her nagging, reluctantly retrieved it.
""It can be torn up, but you still can't have private contact with other men like David or Arthur Lewis. You must come home on time every night. No late returns,"" Joseph warned sternly, ""and certainly don't even think about leaving me.""
""I get it, I get it. You're so handsome—how could I bear to leave you? Our love is now on solid ground.""
Cassie climbed onto his lap and kissed him.
Joseph's mood improved significantly, and he handed over the contract to her.
Cassie burned the agreement. The heavy weight that had been pressing on her chest seemed to finally lift.
All evening, she was chatty and playful in his presence.
Joseph could tell he felt much more alive as well. Seeing her like this, he suddenly realized that losing the agreement didn't matter.
---
The next couple of days, Cassie went to the office as usual, but none of the executives seemed to take notice of her. She wasn't kept in the loop about important company matters.
She often found things out through Jan's gossip—it seemed like no one in the company took her seriously as a board member.
When she went to the cafeteria for lunch and waited in a private room, no dishes arrived even after twenty minutes.
Jan went to confront the manager, and about five minutes later, he came back fuming. ""This is outrageous—your order was clearly given to the room next door, where Robert and Mr. Jonathan were.""
""They're next door?"" Cassie asked, narrowing her eyes.
""Yes,"" Jan said angrily. ""The cafeteria staff fawned all over them.""
Cassie was filled with mixed emotions. She hadn't expected Robert to have won over even the cafeteria staff.
""Forget it, I've lost my appetite. Let's order takeout upstairs.""
Cassie stood up and made her way out when she was suddenly confronted by Olivia Brooks, who scoffed at her with a sneer, ""It doesn't seem so great being the chairman, huh? Coming to the office for a meal without a single greeting - resorting to ordering takeout is just plain sad.""
Cassie gave Joe a knowing look.
Without a word, Joe slapped Olivia Brooks hard across the face, causing it to swell up instantly."
