Chapter 1466 He Had Thought of Everything
Cassie smirked, "Too bad it wasn't Derek who hooked up with you back then. He's way better than Michael."
Laura was stunned. She never had any issues with Derek; he was always so kind and thoughtful. If it had been Derek...
Wait, what was she even thinking?
Derek was Michael's brother. She shouldn't be having these thoughts.
"Cut it out," Laura snapped at Cassie. "That's just ridiculous."
Laura's outburst made her chest ache, and she struggled to catch her breath.
"Okay, okay, I was just messing around. No need to get all riled up," Cassie said, trying to soothe her. "I'll stick around the hospital for the next few days. I'll also get Joseph to check on Megan."
Cassie stepped out and spotted Joseph by the staircase, on the phone.
Seeing her, Joseph said into the phone, "Keep an eye on things and let me know if anything happens."
He hung up and turned to Cassie. "Joel just told me Megan's in the hospital, getting emergency treatment. It's serious."
"What about Michael?" Cassie asked, worried.
"He's there," Joseph replied. Seeing Cassie's worried look, he pulled her close. "How did it go with Laura? Who kidnapped Megan?"
"Don't ask. Let's just say Laura did it. No more digging. Our only goal is to keep Laura out of jail," Cassie said, gripping his hand tightly, her face showing anger. "I hope Michael has some decency left and won't make a big deal out of this, considering Laura had his kid."
"Don't worry. I'll talk to Eric. They're all on Laura's side. If we all pressure him, I doubt Michael would go against the whole Jude Family for Megan," Joseph said with a smile. "Honestly, if Laura did it, I'd be impressed."
"Alright, you head to the Jude Family. I'll stay here with Laura. I won't be home for a few days," Cassie said, pushing Joseph.
Thinking about not being able to hold her at night for so many days, Joseph felt a bit reluctant. "You should inform the Miller Family and hire a nurse."
"I'll get a nurse, but no need to tell the Miller Family. If Rose and the others find out Michael broke Laura's rib, they'll freak out."
After sending Joseph off, Cassie went back to the ward and found Derek already there, feeding Laura porridge. He blew on each spoonful before giving it to her.
The scene felt a bit odd to Cassie.
She knocked on the door and smiled, "Need a hand with that?"
"You're still here?" Derek looked surprised.
Laura swallowed the porridge and quickly said, "Cassie, you should go home. Derek found a nurse for me. Plus, you need to take care of your kids."
"It's fine. Joseph's got the kids. I'll stay here so you won't be bored," Cassie said, walking over with a smile.
Derek thought for a moment and handed the porridge to Cassie. "Alright, I'm a guy, and sometimes it's not very convenient."
Cassie, holding the hot porridge bowl, looked at Derek with a bit more appreciation.
No matter what his intentions were, Laura was still married. Getting too close to another guy could mess up her reputation. Derek was pretty thoughtful about that.
"Laura, just focus on getting better. I'll take care of Maeve for you," Derek said gently. "I've also got someone guarding the door. No one's getting in."
"Thanks." Derek had thought of everything, making Laura feel at ease.
"I haven't told my parents about your situation yet. I'll head to the Presidential Palace and talk to them. You don't need to worry about anything," Derek said before leaving.
Cassie took Derek's spot, blowing on the porridge like he did. But when she fed it to Laura, Laura complained softly, "Cassie, it's too hot. Are you trying to burn me?"
Cassie rolled her eyes. "Derek's wasn't hot?"
"He blew it cool," Laura said.
Alright, so Cassie wasn't as meticulous as a guy.
Outside the emergency room, Michael had been waiting for two hours, holding his head in his hands, when the doctor finally came out.
He rushed over. "How is she?"
"Not good. Her face is disfigured, and the tendons in her hands and feet are cut. She lost a lot of blood, and the treatment was delayed, so all her wounds are infected. We've done surgery to repair the tendons, but the nerves are definitely damaged. Whether she can walk again is uncertain. As for her hands, if she can even just feed herself after a few months, that'd be a miracle."
Michael staggered a few steps before barely standing upright. He grabbed the doctor's collar, shouting, "What do you mean? Are you saying she'll be paralyzed and might not even be able to use her hands? She'll be a cripple?"
"Mr. Jude, we've really done our best. Saving her life was already quite an achievement," the doctor said, slightly intimidated but still firm. "There's one more thing."
Michael looked at him anxiously.
"The patient had a miscarriage," the doctor said hesitantly.
"Miscarriage?" Michael was stunned. "What are you talking about? How could she be pregnant?"
"It's true. She was probably only about two weeks pregnant. But being soaked in dirty water for too long, losing a lot of blood, and the extreme shock caused her to miscarry. Not getting to the hospital in time made things worse. It will be very difficult for her to conceive in the future."
"Two weeks?" Michael was dumbfounded.
Megan had been staying in the apartment all this time, watched by his people. She hadn't gone anywhere. How could she be pregnant?
Could it be one of the bodyguards from EchoReach?
No, two weeks ago, he had spent a night at the apartment after getting drunk.
Could it have been that night?
Impossible.
Michael's head was about to explode.
He had never thought of betraying his marriage, and why hadn't Megan mentioned it to him?
Could it be that she didn't want to ruin his marriage, so she kept it to herself?
At that moment, Michael's guilt towards Megan reached its peak.
If that was the reason, and she couldn't have children in the future, wouldn't Michael bear a huge responsibility?
And she might be paralyzed, with her hands barely able to feed herself. How could she possibly work?
