Chapter 160
"Cassie felt helpless. ""Let me take a look at least.""
""Are you a doctor? Can you treat wounds?""
He left her speechless, but upon noticing blood seeping through the back of his shirt, panic set in. ""Your back is bleeding.""
""Be quiet.""
And Cassie fell silent, frantically calling again to expedite the ambulance.
Thankfully, in three minutes, help arrived.
The paramedics wasted no time slicing open Joseph's shirt to reveal a back marred by a spread of bruises and wounds. Cassie was aghast.
Imagining herself in his place, she knew the pain would've been unbearable, yet he hadn't uttered a word of complaint and had even carried her to safety.
This man was an enigma to her.
At times, she despised his scorn, but it was always he who rescued her from despair again and again.
She had even been the cause of his injury this time.
She was certain, had it not been for his arrival today, she would be dead.
""Honey, don't cry. It's just a superficial wound on his back,"" the paramedic reassured her.
Cassie was silent.
Was she crying? She hadn't even realized.
She wiped her face and, sure enough, there were tears.
Joseph Hernandez glanced at her, feeling a mix of resignation and an inexplicable sweetness in his heart.
She must love him a lot to cry at the sight of his injury. What a fool.
""However, it looks like he's got a torn ligament in his shoulder. He needs surgery right away,"" the paramedic continued to explain.
Cassie was speechless. Couldn't they have given all the information at once? In the end, it meant his injuries were serious. She remembered the excruciating pain from twisting her ankle as a child. The pain from a torn ligament must be unimaginable.
""What's your relationship to the patient? We'll need a family member's signature for the surgery,"" the paramedic asked.
Cassie hesitated, unsure of how to define their relationship, until Joseph Hernandez said, ""She's my wife.""
""Great, she can sign then.""
Inside the cramped space of the ambulance, Cassie looked down at Joseph Hernandez on the stretcher, as he looked up at her, his eyes deep and dark.
Her face inexplicably flushed red, her heart beating wildly.
My wife...
He had never used that title for her in public before. It felt foreign and strange.
But, well... legally speaking, it was accurate according to their marriage certificate.
At the hospital, doctors took Joseph Hernandez for an MRI to confirm his injuries and then presented the paperwork to Cassie for her signature.
While holding onto his belongings in the waiting area, it wasn't long before Noah Collins and Walter showed up.
Once Joseph Hernandez's surgery was done, they efficiently arranged for his stay in a VIP hospital room.
Noah Collins lamented by the bedside, ""Joseph, your hospitalization is going to delay several major cases at our law firm. The losses could be in the billions.""
""Let her pay for it,"" Joseph said, casting a casual glance at Cassie. ""I got hurt saving her, after all.""
Cassie felt like crying all over again. Billions? She could never pay off that kind of debt.
Noah Collins, realizing the gravity of the situation, gave her a sympathetic look. ""You're trapped for life now, Cassie. There's no escaping Joseph's grip.""
