Chapter 1428 Completely Disappointed
"You've been messing around with other women, and now you want me to convince Laura not to divorce you?"
Rose had never been this furious. "And that woman is Megan. How many times have you hurt Laura because of her? Last year, when you got engaged, you were Laura's fiancé, but you still went out with Megan, making Laura look like a fool. Now it's even worse; you're married and still keeping Megan around. Don't even try to tell me you haven't slept with her. I've never heard of a married guy keeping an ex-girlfriend without any romantic involvement."
"I'm telling the truth," Michael said, looking all innocent.
Suddenly, Rose's phone was snatched away, and then Luke's firm voice came through. "You still don't get that you've wronged Laura. You're really clueless. No matter how much money you make, I don't care. Honestly, I never liked you. It's good you're getting divorced. Laura has the Miller Family backing her, and she'll have no trouble finding a better man. Just leave her alone."
Luke hung up.
When Michael tried calling back, he found himself blocked.
Michael was frustrated. He couldn't be sure if Laura had gone back to Silverwood.
He decided to reach out to people from EchoReach to find her.
In less than half an hour, EchoReach reported that Laura had gone to the Presidential Palace.
Michael was stunned. Why would she go there?
Even though Laura was Carl's goddaughter, her relationship with Carl's family wasn't necessarily closer than with Michael's parents.
But the Presidential Palace was safer than other places.
Michael quickly drove over.
The place was heavily guarded, but the guards recognized Michael and let him in without a fuss.
He walked through the garden and saw Violet but not Laura.
"Violet, where's Laura?" Michael asked straight up. "I heard she came here."
"I had the servants take her to the building in the back," Violet said gracefully, signaling for tea to be served and pointing to the sofa. "Have a seat."
Since he was a kid, Michael had always seen Violet as a harmonious person.
He had great respect for her, and his feelings towards her were completely different from those towards Caroline.
Caroline was Michael's biological mother, and she spoiled him. No matter how fiercely they argued, they would make up the next day. But Violet was the First Lady of Madison, and her aura was incomparable to Caroline's.
"Why did you let her stay in that building?" Michael felt uneasy. The building in the back was close to where Derek lived, and the two buildings shared a garden.
"Is that a problem?" Violet smiled meaningfully. "The environment here is much better than yours."
"Of course, I can't compare my place to the Presidential Palace. How about I move in too?" Michael said. "Laura and I can share a building. We won't stay long; once she's calmed down, we'll go back."
Just then, the servant brought the tea.
Violet took the tea, gently brushed it, and lowered her eyes. "Michael, do you really think Laura is just angry?"
"Every couple has arguments," Michael said awkwardly. "Didn't you and Carl ever fight?"
"But Carl never got tangled up with an ex. When we were young, I had my suspicions, but they were all baseless."
Violet took a sip of tea and said earnestly, "Michael, Laura genuinely wants a divorce. She's not joking or trying to force you into anything. She's completely disappointed and insists on getting a divorce."
Michael felt a wave of panic wash over him. "Then please help me persuade her. I haven't done anything wrong. Divorce is bad for Maeve. Can't she think about Maeve?"
Violet frowned. Michael seemed anxious, but his words implied that he blamed Laura for being unreasonable.
Michael was stubborn, only believing in what he thought was right.
"I'm not gonna do that," Violet shook her head. "I heard what you said to your grandfather yesterday. But women are different from men. You think not sleeping with Megan means you're honest and haven't wronged Laura, but women don't see it that way. This is the fundamental difference between you and Laura. It's not just about this issue; you'll have countless arguments in the future. Laura realized this and decided to divorce."
"You two are incompatible. Forcing it will only lead to daily arguments, bringing more unhappiness to Maeve. It's better to sit down calmly and plan a better future for Maeve."
"A better future means not getting divorced." Michael raised his voice, becoming agitated. "You're my family. How can you help her persuade me to get a divorce?"
"See, no matter how much I talk to you, we can't communicate. When I reason with you, you think you're right. Is this the attitude you have when communicating with Laura?"
Violet put down her teacup and said sternly, "Do you understand what an ex is? An ex is someone you can never get involved with after marriage. If you see her on the street, you should avoid her. How many times has your ex humiliated Laura?"
"I said I would send Megan away," Michael said, frustrated that no one understood him.
Violet, a bit impatient, said, "Do as you please. Whether you send her away or not, Laura insists on getting a divorce."
"Violet, are you helping her?" Michael asked incredulously.
"She's my goddaughter. Why wouldn't I help her?" Violet said.
"But you only took Laura as your goddaughter because of me. You didn't agree at first."
"I didn't agree because I didn't know Laura well then," Violet interrupted. "After spending time with her, I can see that Laura is an honest and straightforward person. I'm the First Lady, and many people try to curry favor with me, but Laura never has. She hasn't used our name for anything outside."
Violet stood up. "Laura's parents raised her well, giving her a happy family. She's not greedy; she has ambition but also her principles. So, Carl and I decided to respect her."
Seeing Violet's determination, Michael panicked.
"It doesn't matter if you and Carl agree," Michael said, his voice rising. "As long as I don't agree, Laura can't do anything. My parents and grandfather won't agree either."
Michae's patience was wearing thin.. "I'll go talk to Laura," he muttered, turning away.
But two bodyguards blocked his way.
