Chapter 523
Cassie found herself nestled within the tranquil confines of the mansion's garden, indulging in a moment of respite. Rosalind had retreated to retrieve her shawl, leaving Cassie alone to appreciate the exquisite panorama of Snowford Evergreen that unfolded before her.
As the night breeze wafted past, it carried with it a tantalizing hint of the forthcoming summer bloom.
"Congratulations, you're pregnant," came the voice of Liam, his approach slow and measured.
Cassie offered him no acknowledgement, her gaze remaining fixed on the horizon.
"Ah, you're still mad. You're Joseph's wife," Liam remarked, settling himself beside her. "You should thank me. Everything you possess now is because of me."
Cassie turned to regard Liam, her words caught in her throat. Never before had she encountered such audacity. Yet, the actions of his past no longer held her interest. Recent events had brought forth a myriad of issues and individuals that demanded her attention.
Liam's gaze fell upon the scar that marred her face, a flicker of regret passing over his features. "Um... I came here to caution you. You need to be vigilant."
"What?" Cassie inquired, her brow furrowing in confusion.
"About Joseph. I heard that when the wife is pregnant, the husband is easily lured by other women. So, you need to keep a close eye on Joseph," Liam jested.
Cassie found herself at a loss for words.
"Well, I have other matters to attend to. I'll take my leave. Don't linger here too long," Liam waved dismissively before departing.
Cassie frowned instinctively. Why had Liam taken the trouble to warn her? And he wasn't the first. Nina had issued a similar warning. But who was she supposed to be wary of? Cassie was still struggling to decipher the puzzle.
"What did he say to you?" Joseph's voice broke through her thoughts as he approached, a shawl draped over his arm. His gaze followed Liam's retreating figure, a deep frown etching itself onto his features.
"He didn't say anything," Cassie deflected, averting her gaze.
"Regardless of what he said, don't trust him. He's still vying for Hernandez's CEO position. He knows you're my weakness, so he's trying to sow discord between us," Joseph stated, gently lifting her into his arms. "Let's go inside and watch a movie together."
"I don't want to," Cassie hesitated, torn between her desire for company and her resentment towards his recent aloofness.
"Women always say the opposite of what they mean. When you say 'No,' you actually mean 'Yes,'" Joseph countered, carrying her into the media room.
Despite having resided here for some time, this was Cassie's first experience watching a movie with Joseph in this room. "You must have brought many blind dates here to watch movies."
"I haven't..." Joseph began to refute, but a memory of watching a movie with Luna in this very room halted his words.
A spark of jealousy ignited within Cassie.
Joseph smirked, leaning in to capture her lips in a kiss. "Are you jealous? I didn't watch anything with Luna here. Besides, I was on my phone the whole time and had no idea what we were watching."
"I'm not jealous. Go away," Cassie retorted, a blush creeping onto her cheeks as she tried to suppress her anger at his smug expression.
"I don’t want to go. You choose a movie and I'll peel some almonds for you. The baby can only be smart if they eat plenty of high-quality protein," Joseph suggested, his tone playful. He refrained from voicing his final thought - unlike their mother, who always found herself in trouble.
Cassie cast a glance at Joseph and the almonds, nodding in agreement. "I should eat more. If her brain ended up as devoid of intelligence as his, that would be disastrous."
Cassie selected a sci-fi movie with a compelling storyline.
Throughout the film, Joseph occasionally offered Cassie an almond, each one carrying a milky fragrance and a pleasing taste. Despite her initial lack of appetite, Cassie found herself consuming seven or eight of them. She couldn't help but reflect on her decision to invite Joseph upstairs. He certainly had a knack for driving a person to the brink of insanity.
