Chapter 521
Of late, every encounter between them had escalated into a dispute. Joseph, in a sudden moment of clarity, noticed her diminished frame and the weariness etched on her face. She was supposed to be gaining weight during her pregnancy, not losing it.
Joe, who had been observing in silence, hesitated for a moment before voicing his concern. "Joseph," he began, cautiously, "I believe you've been rather harsh with Rosalind recently..." His sentence was cut short by Joseph's icy stare.
"Uh... I understand your reluctance to let Cassie socialize, fearing it might lead her to overthink. But she's been confined to the mansion for so long, she's lonely and bored. And you haven't been around or even checked up on her. The most she does every day is stand by the window, gazing outside. She looks so... pitiful."
Pitiful? The word resonated in Joseph's mind, causing a pang of heartache. Could his wife truly be an object of pity? "I didn't answer her calls because they always led to arguments about Nina's affairs."
"But Cassie doesn’t understand. She might think you're tired of her," Joe suggested gently.
Joseph fell silent, mulling over Joe's words.
After a good twenty minutes, Cassie slowly opened her eyes. Realizing she was in a hospital, her hand instinctively moved to her belly. Her child...
"Don't worry, the baby is safe," Joseph assured her, his tone gentle as he held her hand.
Could Joseph be so tender towards her? Cassie was taken aback, wondering if she was still dreaming.
"Why are you staring at me?" Joseph asked, lightly brushing her hair and pressing her hand to his lips. " Cassie, I admit I've been neglectful. Despite your pregnancy, I haven't been there for you, haven't taken care of you. Instead, I've been arguing with you. It wasn't intentional. Give me some time to improve. Let's go on a trip abroad together. We've never traveled as a couple."
Cassie remained silent for a moment before voicing her concern. "Are you planning to spoil me for a few days and then ignore me again?"
Joseph smiled sadly, "Must we argue over Nina? Think of our child. Do you want them to grow up without parents?"
Tears welled up in Cassie's eyes. Having grown up without parents herself, she did not want her child to suffer the same fate.
"I've been avoiding you and not answering your calls because I don't want to hurt you. My love for you hasn't changed," Joseph confessed, holding Cassie's hand and kissing the back of it. "I promise to return home as soon as I finish my work."
"I don't want to talk to you," Cassie responded, turning away. She was torn, unable to bear Joseph's indifference and disregard, yet unable to forget that they had sent Nina to prison.
After Cassie finished her IV drip in the afternoon, Joseph personally escorted her back to the mansion.
Grandma, unaware of Cassie's fainting spell, was overjoyed to see them return together and instructed the kitchen to prepare extra dishes.
In the evening, Walter suddenly inquired, "How has your mother been managing at the office recently?"
"She hasn't been to the office," Joseph replied.
Walter snorted at the news. "Is she still clinging to Marcus? Mabel is driving me insane."
Joseph remained silent. Mabel wasn't foolish. She was just overly trusting and in love with Marcus.
