Chapter 418
The air around Laura Miller was practically crackling with her suppressed rage when a familiar masculine voice sliced through her fury, demanding her attention.
As she swiveled around, her eyes landed on Michael Randal sauntering towards her, an insufferable smirk gracing his features as if he were the king of the world.
"Darling, you claimed your heart belonged to me just last night, yet here you are, entwined with another man today. Are you toying with me?" Michael's insinuating words made Laura's skin prickle with discomfort.
"Who is this man to you? What is the nature of your relationship with him?" Benjamin's voice hardened, his handsome face taking on a sudden edge at the sight of the newcomer.
Men are inherently territorial, and had Michael been an ordinary man, Benjamin would have dismissed him without a second thought. However, Michael's strikingly handsome features and his poised demeanor radiated a captivating, rebellious allure that was impossible to overlook. It was clear that he was far from ordinary.
Laura's gaze flitted nervously, and before she could process her actions, she found herself clutching onto Michael's arm. "Oh, I neglected to mention, I have a new boyfriend now, and it's him."
Michael's body stiffened in surprise. This was not the reaction he had anticipated. He had arrived with the intention of stirring the pot, possibly even driving a wedge between them, but instead, he found himself playing the role of an unwitting cupid.
"No way." Benjamin's face drained of color, his emotions laid bare. He reached out, grasping Laura's hand. "Are you trying to provoke me with this, Laura? Fine, you've succeeded, I'm provoked. Let's go home."
"How many times must I repeat myself, we're over," Laura retorted, pulling Michael's face towards hers. "Look at him, isn't he stunning? He's like the protagonist straight out of a graphic novel, the embodiment of every woman's dream. He's got the looks, he's got the physique. Benjamin, you were my world, and I was blind to everything else. But now that I'm in New York, I've realized there are plenty of wonderful men out there, and you're simply not worth my time anymore."
Michael stood there, utterly flabbergasted.
Damn, who was it that had insulted him, calling him a stinking pile of dog excrement? Who had dared to claim he resembled a cross-dresser? Who had said he wasn't masculine? This woman's tongue was a spinning wheel of tales, blurring the line between reality and fantasy.
"Do you think spouting all that nonsense will make me believe you?" Benjamin shook his head in disbelief, refusing to accept her words. "You're just angry about me and Julia, you're trying to make me jealous..."
"I'm not lying to you, I genuinely like him. Don't believe me? Watch this." Without another word, Laura seized Michael's tie, pulled him down, and standing on her tiptoes, planted a passionate kiss on his lips.
Michael's eyes bulged in utter shock.
Never in his life had he been kissed so audaciously by a woman. Just as he was about to push her away, Laura gripped the back of his head and whispered into his ear, her voice meant only for him, "Didn't you want to prove yourself last time? Well, now's your chance."
"..."
It was impossible to reject the challenge to his manhood. To push her away would be tantamount to admitting defeat, and that thought stung him deeply.
Succumbing to his anger, he swept her back into his embrace and reciprocated her kiss with equal fervor.
Benjamin watched the two of them, his eyes reddening with the sting of betrayal. Was this the love she had so often professed?
After pursuing him relentlessly, the moment he decided to genuinely care for her, she repaid him with pain.
"Laura, I'm so disappointed in you. You won't see me again," he declared before storming off, his stride a mixture of awkwardness and fury.
She didn't see the moment it happened - as he turned away, a tear slipped from Laura Miller's eye, landing on the two lips that were locked together. Michael tasted the salty hint of it.
He paused, taken aback. And then, she shoved him away with all her might.
