Chapter 57 I just want to be the aunt-in-law

David was slightly taken aback, thinking no wonder her name sounded familiar.

He recalled Cassie's poised demeanor earlier and frowned. "I don't think someone of her caliber needs to plagiarize. I've met many people in the business world, and I'm a good judge of character. She's very talented, and there isn't an issue with her integrity. On the contrary, Arthur, I think you're biased against her."

"You really don't know her."

David countered, "Don't you find it strange? You used to speak highly of her when we talked on the phone. Now, you suddenly despise her. Did she do something to wrong you? It seems like you were the one who betrayed her first."

Arthur was taken aback, left speechless. He felt a bit lost inside.

"Just like you say Olivia is a thousand times better, but I don't see her skills or abilities. If she weren't the heir to the Brooks Group, I wouldn't even give her a second look." David pulled the blueprint from Arthur's hand and walked out.

By the time Arthur came to his senses, David was already gone.

Cassie was preoccupied all day, thinking about Arthur's engagement party. She finally made it through the workday and rushed home, waiting until it was completely dark outside before Joseph returned.

"I think I saw you at Garden Height today."

"You went there today?" Joseph raised an eyebrow in surprise.

"Yeah. What were you doing there?" Cassie smiled. "Did you buy a house there?"

"No." Joseph picked up a fork from the table. Noah had persuaded him to look at houses there, considering he would be staying in Silverwood for a while. With Dakota about to give birth, this house would definitely be too small.

After visiting, he realized the villas in Garden Height were too large. Given Cassie's current trauma, she would definitely be scared, so he didn't consider it further.

He didn't notice that Cassie's smile froze upon hearing his words. If Arthur hadn't explicitly said that Joseph bought a villa in Garden Height, she might have believed him.

She couldn't understand why he would hide this from her. Was he trying to prevent her from eyeing his wealth, or was it because he wanted Olivia to design the house and keep it a secret?

If it was the former, she could let it go. But if it was the latter, she really couldn't accept it. He clearly knew that the Brookses almost took her life, and her feud with Olivia was irreconcilable.

"Even if you did, it wouldn't matter. I wouldn't ask you to let me decorate it," she said in a half-joking tone.

"I said I didn't, so I didn't," Joseph replied bluntly.

Cassie squeezed the fork and changed the subject. "Do you have any events coming up where you need a date?"

"No, I don't." The people in Silverwood were of such low status that it wasn't worth his time.

"Fine, you don't need one, but I do," Cassie said.

Joseph put down his fork and looked at her with a furrowed brow. "What are you trying to say?"

"At the end of the month, it's my grandma's 80th birthday. The birthday party and Arthur and Olivia's engagement ceremony are on the same day. I have to go back. My grandma has always been very good to me. Would you be willing to go with me?" Cassie was practically begging, looking up at him with hopeful eyes.

Joseph quickly understood the Brooks family's intentions.

"I remember telling you before we got our marriage certificate that I wouldn't meet your family."

"But you're going to the engagement ceremony anyway," she blurted out.

"Why would I go?" Joseph was utterly baffled. He didn't even know them.

Cassie almost said, "Aren't you Arthur's uncle?" But if she said that, Joseph might guess she approached him with an ulterior motive. "Because many of Silverwood's elites will be there. I thought you would attend."

"Sorry, I don't attend such low-class events."

Cassie fell silent, thinking, 'Low-class? Joseph won't attend just because it is low-class. How high-class do he has to be? Are all overseas returnees this impressive now?' Cassie was utterly confused.

"Besides, I advise you not to go either. If something happens to you again, I won't help you," Joseph warned her seriously.

Any last hope Cassie had that he might have some feelings for her evaporated. She lost her appetite and took her phone to the side to vent to Laura: [Is this the guy you said might have a crush on me? Sorry, I don't feel it at all. I'm about to explode with anger.]

Laura: [Hang in there. Do you want to go out for a bite? It's been a while since we had a late-night snack together.]

Cassie: [I don't think I can. If I go out, he'll definitely say something.]

Laura: [Enough already. You're not his real nanny, and he doesn't even give you an allowance. You're spoiling him too much.]

Cassie glanced silently at Joseph, who didn't even clear his dishes after eating, and felt a wave of frustration. She reluctantly got up to clear the dishes. After washing her hands, she said, "I'm going out for a while."
