Chapter 1444 Beat Megan Up

Laura looked totally lost.

She had no clue about this stuff.

Suddenly, she felt like a naive kid next to Derek.

"Since you're living in the Presidential Palace, you should hang out with Derek more," Cassie suggested. "I know you're not into sucking up to people, but if you want to start a business, you need connections. And as long as you're still married to Michael, you need Carl's family on your side. What about Maeve otherwise?"

Laura nodded, taking it all in. She hadn't thought about this before, but Cassie made a good point.

"This jacket should look good on Derek," Cassie said, pulling out a coat. They started chatting about it.

When Laura got back to the Presidential Palace, it was just in time for dinner.

But during the meal, Carl and Derek were all about work.

Violet, feeling left out, turned to Laura and said, "Get ready in a couple of days to go to a banquet with me."

Laura was surprised. Any event Violet attended was a big deal. With all the divorce rumors flying around, Violet taking her out now was a clear sign she had her back.

Laura felt grateful and nodded quickly.

After dinner, as Laura was pushing Maeve to the backyard, Derek was heading to his quarters and walked with her.

"Where's my clothes?" he asked, "You said you'd make it up to me."

Laura rolled her eyes. "Are you that desperate? It's not like you're running out of clothes."

"Not really, but I'm worried you'll flake," Derek sighed. "That outfit cost me a month's salary. Don't be fooled by the fact that I live here; my salary is actually way less than yours."

Laura was speechless, but after thinking about it, she realized he might actually earn less than her.

Feeling a bit smug, she said, "I bought it. It's in my room. Come with me to get it."

"Sure," Derek said, looking pleased.

Laura was secretly puzzled. Was Derek really that excited over just one outfit?

Once inside, she handed him three bags. "Try them on first. If they don't fit, I can exchange them."

She added, "They're not luxury brands. Cassie said with your status, it's better to keep it low-key. They're not super expensive, just a few hundred bucks."

"That's perfect. Because of my status, I usually can't wear anything too flashy," Derek said, pulling out the clothes. It was a caramel-colored cashmere coat, a matching plaid shirt, and black pants.

He only tried on the coat. His usual dark clothes made the brighter color a refreshing change, making him look younger, almost like a college student.

Laura checked him out and had to admit he looked great. But thinking about his status, she second-guessed herself. "Is the color too bright? I should've listened to Cassie and gone with black."

"No, it's pretty comfy, and always wearing black gets boring," Derek said. He kept the coat on and went to play with Maeve.

Laura felt a lot better.

Giving someone clothes and having them actually like it was a win; it showed she had good taste.

And Derek not taking it off? That was a big compliment.

The next morning at breakfast, Violet looked at Derek and smiled. "This outfit looks great, very gentlemanly. It's good to switch it up sometimes. Don't be like your dad, always dressing so stiffly. You're almost thirty and still don't have a girlfriend."

Derek corrected her, "Mom, I'm only twenty-six, not even close to thirty."

"Once you're past twenty-six, you're basically twenty-seven. How far is that?" Violet said, annoyed. "You should start dating. In a few years, you can get married."

"Mom, I'm not interested in getting married," Derek said, sipping his milk. "I don't feel anything for those women."

The table went silent, and everyone stared at him.

Even Laura couldn't help but look at him strangely.

Carl put down his spoon and said seriously, "Maybe you just haven't met the right person."

"Exactly," Violet quickly added.

Faced with Violet's nagging, Derek just shrugged and stayed quiet.

Breakfast ended on a sour note, and Derek left early.

Violet watched him leave with a grim face. "What does he mean? He doesn't want to get married ever?"

Laura quickly tried to comfort her, "He just hasn't found the right one yet."

"I hope so," Violet frowned. "But Derek hasn't dated anyone seriously since college. It's been four or five years. So many great girls chase after him, but he shows no interest. He doesn't even have any close female friends."

Violet finished and glared at Carl. "It's your fault. You insisted on sending him abroad to study, and I couldn't set him up with anyone."

Carl was also in a bad mood. "Stop overthinking."

He thought for a moment and then said to Violet, "Why don't you pick a few girls from good families and let Derek meet them?"

Laura was speechless. These two were just scared Derek wouldn't get married.

After breakfast, Laura was about to head to work when she got a message on her phone: [Laura, it's Megan. I want to talk to you privately. Can we meet?]

Talk?

Talk about what?

Laura had seen Megan's tricks before.

They'd start talking, and halfway through, Megan would start crying, making it look like Laura was bullying her. Then Michael would show up, think Laura was the bad guy, and they'd end up fighting.

Laura sneered.

She tossed her phone aside, not bothering with Megan.

But after a moment, she thought about it. If Michael misunderstood, so what? She didn't plan to stay with him anyway.

In fact, she could even beat Megan up. Maybe then Michael would hate her enough to agree to the divorce.
