Chapter 186

"He told himself not to get too angry.
Perhaps he had been too indulgent with Cassie.
Did she really think she was the center of his world?
And just like that, the call was over.
Cassie stared at her phone, dazed, until David approached, ""Was that Mr. Hernandez? Is he coming to visit Mrs. Parker? If so, I should get going to avoid any misunderstandings.""

""No, he didn’t say he was coming.""
Suddenly, Cassie felt off. That’s right, Joseph never mentioned coming to see Mrs. Parker from the start.
David chuckled, ""That makes sense, he’s not family after all. I've already squared things away with the doctor so don’t worry too much.”

""Thank you.”
Cassie was truly grateful; without David's help, she doubted today would have been manageable.
She had considered reaching out to Joseph earlier, but recalling his icy demeanor, she guessed he probably hadn't given it a second thought.

""No worries. I'll be off then; got a dinner party tonight.”
He knew the drill, just enough help to be useful without making her suspicious.
""Okay,"" Cassie walked him to the door.
The rest of the evening passed without any word from Joseph.
After the caregiver arrived, she drove back to the villa.
Other than Dakota, who was playing with the three kittens, only Mrs. Parker was at home, engrossed in watching TV.
""Where’s Mr. Hernandez?""
Mrs. Parker sounded surprised, ""Didn’t he tell you? Mr. Hernandez called me this evening to say he's on a business trip to New York for a few days.""

Cassie was taken aback—she hadn't known.
Suddenly, a bit of anger bubbled up inside her. As her boyfriend, he hadn’t shown any concern for Mrs. Parker’s hospitalization, and now a business trip with no heads up, what was he up to?
She called him after going upstairs.
The line connected to a cacophony, clearly a bar or some raucous venue.
""Where are you? Aren’t you supposed to be on a business trip?""
""Mhm,"" his voice was nonchalant.
Cassie felt unhappy, ""Why didn't you tell me about the trip?""
""Do I need to report my whereabouts to you?""
Joseph’s response was like a cold shower over her head.
That was it; because he'd joined her for beef stew, bought her clothes, sketched designs—she had taken him completely for her boyfriend.
But he might not see things the same way.
""Alright, I won't ask anymore.""
Cassie ended the call, lay down on her bed, and tears began to well in her eyes.
To be honest, today she had heard too much from Mrs. Parker’s lips - the death of her grandmother, and the revelation that Isabella was her mother.
She wanted to go back, to cry in Joseph’s arms, to pour her heart out, but he wouldn't give her the chance.
...
In the noisy private room, Joseph ended the call with irritation already simmering inside him. The chattering of the women around only exacerbated his agitation.
In a brusque motion, he threw his phone and barked, “Everyone out, now!”

The women promptly scampered out, the commotion subsiding instantly, leaving only three men in the silence."
