Chapter 118

"The cop cut her off , and Cassie found herself locked up once again.

She was ushered into a cramped room housing seven or eight others, each assigned nothing more than a plank of wood for a bed.

No sooner had she taken a seat than a big woman marched over and dumped a bucket of water onto her makeshift bed.

""What the hell?"" Cassie blurted out, immediately drawing a circle of fierce-looking women around her.

""You got a problem with me?"" the stout woman snarled, rolling up her sleeves threateningly. ""Just so you know, the last pretty face who raised her voice at me wound up dead because of it.""

""I... I'm sorry, just do whatever you want,"" conceded Cassie, wisely picking her battles. The company in that room wasn't exactly the forgiving type, and she knew when to hold her tongue.

But it seemed they weren't about to let her off the hook just yet.

""Sorry doesn't cut it in my book. I despise good-looking women like you. It's because of your kind that my husband left me,"" the woman snarled as she lunged at Cassie with a flurry of fists and kicks.

Cassie tried to scream for help, but her pleas were muffled as a hand clamped over her mouth.

It wasn't long before the beating left her dizzy and disoriented, hearing muffled voices saying, ""Go on, nobody will care if she's dead.""

""She crossed the wrong people.""

""Who was it this time? Olivia Brooks? Robert? Ha, pain used to matter to me, but now I'm numb to it.""

But who was left to turn to? Her relationship with Joseph Hernandez was over, and Laura... Laura surely wasn't a match for the Anderson family, was she?

---

The moment Laura Miller heard from the news that Cassie was taken into custody, she rushed to the police station without delay.

As she reached the entrance, she ran into Arthur Lewis, who was just leaving with his lawyer.

""What are you doing here?"" Laura practically spat when she saw the slimeball, her anger rising. ""Perfect timing. You need to tell the cops that Cassie is innocent. She’s been penniless lately, how could she embezzle any money? It's clear Height Company's trying to frame and scapegoat her.""

""I've been there, but look, I'm not with Height Company; my word means nothing to them. Besides, they told me Height Company's submitted evidence... it all points to Cassie,"" Arthur admitted with a weighted expression, fists clenched.

Outsiders were clueless, but he knew the truth. Cassie had left Height Company because of Alexander's dirty tricks within the project. How could someone like her, who left on such terms, be guilty of embezzlement?
""How could this happen?"" Laura Miller said in disbelief. ""Cassie's his own flesh and blood. Is he trying to get his daughter thrown in jail?""

Arthur Lewis was fuming. He hadn't imagined that Robert would actually go along with Height Company's plan to pin everything on Cassie.

To outsiders, it might look like tough love, but in reality, Robert was willing to sacrifice Cassie to save Alexander.

Of course, Olivia Brooks might have had a hand in this too.

Now he was kicking himself! If only he hadn't been duped by Olivia Brooks, if he had just been a bit more cautious, Cassie wouldn't be in this mess.

""I'm going to call my brother right now and get him to hire the best lawyer to bail her out,"" Laura said resolutely.

""Don't bother,"" Arthur interrupted her, ""I've already brought a lawyer, and it was no use. Once the Anderson family is involved, no one can make a difference.""
