Chapter 1196 Lucas Seems A Bit Off
"Did you miss me?" Joseph asked, holding her waist tenderly. "I've been super busy lately."
"Not really. We see each other every day," Cassie replied, then felt a sharp pinch on her waist.
She glared at him. "What are you doing?"
"How dare you say you don't miss me," Joseph teased.
"I see you every night; what's there to miss?" Cassie pouted. She had basically moved into the Hernandez House, which was spacious, and she and the kids had their own place, so she didn't have to deal with Mildred and Walter every day since she hadn't divorced David yet.
"Even if I see you every day, I still miss you," Joseph said, lifting her chin for a kiss.
Cassie quickly dodged. "Stop it. I came to see you for a reason."
"What is it?"
"I visited Bernice at the hospital today. She had some trouble."
Joseph paused, trying to remember who Bernice was. "Since when did you two get so close?"
"Actually, we hadn't kept in touch since that dinner, but Laura dragged me over today. We chatted, and I really admire her," Cassie said. "I've been in Whisperlyn City for a while and don't have many friends. I used to have Nina."
At the mention of Nina, Joseph tensed up.
Cassie noticed but didn't push it. "Bernice is great. Even though she's in the entertainment industry, she's different. We hit it off."
"It's good you made a new friend," Joseph agreed.
"But," Cassie hesitated, "Lucas seems off. He's Bernice's doctor now. Isn't he an oncologist? She was stabbed; he shouldn't be handling her case."
Joseph raised an eyebrow. "Do you think he likes Bernice?"
Cassie fumed. "I asked Lucas, and he didn't deny it. He even told us to mind our own business. Does he think I want to meddle? He can be with any other woman, but Bernice is decent. He's about to marry Sarah, and now he's involved with Bernice. Does he have no shame? Are women just playthings to him?"
Joseph gently patted her head. "Maybe it's a misunderstanding. Lucas doesn't take relationships seriously. Even if he dates, it's always consensual. With his status, many women, especially in the entertainment industry, throw themselves at him."
"What are you implying?" Cassie shook off his hand. "That Bernice is seducing him?"
Joseph frowned. "Cassie, don't get so worked up. Maybe you haven't known Bernice that long, so you don't really know her well."
"No, Bernice is straightforward with us. She never hides anything." Cassie got off his lap. "It's you men who are unfaithful and then blame women."
"Cassie."
"Joseph, I don't want to talk to you anymore," Cassie snapped. "You don't know Lucas at all. You better talk some sense into him. He's about to get married; if he wants a woman, he can go to Sarah. There's no need to involve Bernice."
Cassie grabbed her bag and stormed off.
Joseph, feeling anxious, followed her. "Cassie, don't be mad. I misspoke. I'll talk to Lucas later and see what's going on, okay? You're the only one I care about."
Cassie glanced at him. "Joseph, men think differently. I'm sure Bernice isn't that kind of person. She's smart and popular. If people find out she's involved in someone else's marriage, her career will be over. Plus, Sarah isn't someone to mess with. Lucas is being selfish, thinking with his desire. He doesn't realize he's risking Bernice's future. Didn't he ruin Nina before?"
"Okay, you're right," Joseph agreed, not wanting to upset her further.
"I'm leaving. Come back after you've talked to Lucas," Cassie said, picking up her bag and leaving.
Joseph watched her go, thinking, 'If it's true, Lucas is being unfair.'
After finishing his work, Joseph drove straight to the hospital.
"You're still on duty this late?" Joseph asked, surprised to see Lucas in a white coat.
Lucas, unlike other doctors, was the youngest leader of the Nelson Group and a top-notch medical expert. Patients from around the world paid a high price for his treatment. Given his status, he didn't need to be on night duty unless it was for surgery or an emergency.
"Cassie sent you?" Lucas looked up, his eyes sharp behind his glasses.
Joseph sat down, giving him a strange look. "Cassie mentioned something earlier, and I didn't take it seriously. But now, what's going on with you?"
Joseph remembered Lucas being in a bad mood while playing pool the other night. Michael had talked to him for a long time, but Lucas still looked upset.
"I just find Bernice interesting," Lucas said, unbuttoning his shirt collar with a smile.
"Did she flirt with you or promise you something?" Joseph asked, puzzled.
"No," Lucas paused and denied it.
Joseph was surprised. "That's not like you, Lucas. You never force women."
"I'm not forcing anyone," Lucas shrugged. "I'm still pursuing her."
"Pursuing?" Joseph frowned. "You're about to get married. You don't have the right to pursue anyone. Lucas, I know you're not marrying Sarah out of love, but you are her fiancé. Laura and Cassie are Bernice's friends. They have similar personalities. They're not the type to be played with, nor do they care about clinging to powerful men. They're spiritually rich and prefer to rely on themselves."
