Chapter 167
""Yes, lucky indeed. You're like a lucky star, a savior,"" Cassie replied, not wanting to argue with a patient.
No sooner had she finished the thought when a message from David popped up on her WhatsApp: ""Heard from Billy that you had a close call at work. You alright? Mind if I come by? Kinda worried.""
Cassie let out a mental sigh. David was genuinely good to her.
Pity she no longer had any reason to get back at Arthur Lewis, marrying her uncle-in-law was definitely off the table.
She replied, ""Thanks for the concern, I'm fine. The villa's renovations won't be delayed.""
David texted back, ""The villa can wait. What matters is your safety.""
""Who you chatting with?"" Joseph's irked voice floated over.
""Just Laura,"" Cassie hastily put down her phone, lying without a flicker in her expression.
""I was wondering if you were texting David or Arthur Lewis. Just make sure I don't find you messaging them,"" Joseph cautioned.
""...Don't overthink it,"" she muttered.
Cassie jumped, feeling a glimpse of panic. Could this man actually read minds?
""Hmm, come here, my wound is hurting again,"" Joseph said, casting a resentful glance her way.
Cassie was left speechless.
So he was playing the card where he needed her affection again? Could he be any more fickle? It used to be that a mere touch seemed almost lethal to him.
----------
It was a week before Joseph was discharged from the hospital.
Cassie stayed by his side the whole time, having to request more time off work.
Billy didn't hold it against her, knowing she'd nearly lost her life because of the job. He asked, ""Still want to be on the Peace Group project? If not, I can assign a different designer.""
""I'd like to give it another go. If it doesn't work out, then find someone else,"" she said.
Cassie couldn't let go of the hefty commission. Just as she pondered where to begin, Mr. Willow unexpectedly reached out to her, ""Miss Brooks, truly sorry about the other day. I've been appealing to the higher-ups—they also express their apologies and have decided to award the furnished apartment project to Peace Group.""
Cassie thought she'd misheard, feeling as if her string of bad luck was finally turning around.
""But we haven't really discussed..."" she started.
""The reputation of Mason Stone speaks for itself. Still, I need a detailed design draft from you. It's urgent; the executives want to see it the day after tomorrow.""
Caught in a dilemma, considering Peace Group had to design ten different styles for the luxury apartments, and the deadline was too close, she hesitated but quickly nodded, ""Sure, but we sign a contract first.""
""Come to the office this afternoon, we'll have it signed.""
That afternoon, Cassie made another trip to the sales office. This time she didn't have to wait long and soon signed off on the contract with Peace Group.
After dinner and a bath for Joseph, she spoke with urgency, ""Tonight, I need to pull an all-nighter in the study drafting plans. You should get some sleep early, don't mind me.""
Joseph frowned, understanding the stubborn determination of youth. Although he disliked it, he didn't comment.
It was when she stayed up again the following night that he lost his temper, ""Cassie, are you out of your mind? After sleepless nights caring for me at the hospital, and not resting even when back home, are you trying to work yourself to death?""
""Just need to get through tonight, I'll be fine.""
Sipping her coffee, Cassie felt a trace of warmth in her heart. Was he showing concern for her?
Unyielding, Joseph commanded, ""I don't care, you're going to bed now. If you drop dead, that's on you, but who will cook for me then? I didn't fight that lawsuit for nothing.""
""...""
Alright, concern must be an illusion.
Clenching her teeth, Cassie retorted in frustration, ""Don't worry. Since I promised to cook for you, I won't go anywhere no matter what happens.""
