Chapter 1538 Transformation
Cassie mumbled, "Okay, you've gone on and on about what might happen if you two hook up, but you never said you don't like him."
Cassie suddenly tilted her head and raised an eyebrow, "I thought you'd deny it. I'm his family, and I only see him as family, with no feelings at all. How am I supposed to handle this?"
Laura was taken aback for a moment, and then her pretty face turned red.
"Come on, we've been friends forever, it's no big deal," Cassie winked at her playfully, "Derek is handsome, steady, smart, romantic, and considerate. He was there for you when you were at your lowest. It's not surprising you'd fall for him without even realizing it."
"Don't you think I'm being too casual?" Laura bit her lip and asked awkwardly, "I just got divorced, and I had a baby not long ago."
"Stop, what does liking someone have to do with any of that?" Cassie raised her hand to stop her, "Besides, didn't Michael get married just a few days after your divorce? Nobody said you have to stop seeing men to mourn for your marraiges."
"But didn't you also never forget Joseph after you divorced him?" Laura glanced at Cassie with a hint of sadness.
"That's different. You and Michael got married because of the baby. Just when everything was starting to stabilize and you both wanted to work on the marriage, Megan showed up. During that time, if you told me you fell in love with Michael, I wouldn't believe it. At most, you liked him a bit because you were attracted to his looks, and wanted to make it work for Maeve."
Cassie continued, "And if Michael hadn't cheated with Megan, you probably wouldn't hate him so much."
Laura thought to herself that Cassie, her longest-known friend, seemed to understand her better than she understood herself.
"Cassie, I really can't understand why Derek would like me," Laura looked blankly at the light in the lounge. "Derek is so amazing, and I've been abandoned time and again. The reasons for these abandonments were because I lost to other women. Maybe Derek is just temporarily curious about me, so it's fresh. Besides, men might inherently seek some excitement."
Laura continued, "I admit, I do like Derek a bit. That morning when you made coffee and asked me those questions, I realized it. But I'm scared. Because I don't think it will work out. It would take much more effort than being with Benjamin to be with Derek."
"I've been hurt twice, and one marriage ended in failure. I don't dare to try again. If I fall in love with someone wholeheartedly again and get abandoned, what should I do? I'm scared. I used to think I would try to start a new relationship in the future, but at least with someone suitable, not someone I love. At least I could control my heart and retreat anytime without getting hurt. But if I get together with Derek, I definitely won't be able to control myself. I might go from liking him a little to loving him a lot." Laura's voice was hoarse as she finished speaking. She sniffed hard, afraid her tears would fall.
Laura only felt comfortable sharing her real thoughts with Cassie.
These were Laura's true feelings.
Cassie got it, and her eyes showed a bit of heartache.
In the end, Laura had been hurt too deeply by Benjamin and Michael, losing her confidence.
Cassie wondered how Laura had ended up like this.
That damn Michael, Cassie would make sure he wouldn't have it easy.
"Laura, if you told your parents this, they would be so heartbroken," Cassie said softly, "You have been loved and protected by your family since you were little. They raised you with so much care. You should be incredibly confident. How did you become like this?"
"I don't know. Since the day I got divorced, I have been doubting if I'm worthy of happiness," Laura choked out.
"Don't say that. Who hasn't been hurt? Do you remember when Arthur didn't want me and when Joseph divorced me for Megan? I was pregnant with twins, locked up, and even sent to a mental hospital. I never lost confidence in myself."
Cassie comforted her, "It's not that you're not good enough; it's that you met bad men. Maybe when you are old, you'll know what a good man is like. To be honest, I can't be sure Joseph will always be faithful. I just gave him a chance to prove himself."
Laura was silent for a full two minutes before speaking again, "Cassie, you are right."
"I was like you, lost in the untruthful world, but I'm different from you. If I'm betrayed, I would never doubt myself. It's clearly the other person's problem. Why do you even think about it?" Cassie laughed, "And what about the president? So what if he's the president's son? So what if you're divorced with a child? You're beautiful, young, and talented. How are you any less than those women who haven't been married?"
Laura was stunned for a moment, then suddenly laughed.
After laughing, Laura felt much better.
"Cassie, thank you," Laura said.
"Laura, don't overthink it. Carl is the president now, but presidents always change. Who knows if he'll still be president in a few years? The Jude family is powerful now, but nobody knows about the future." Cassie said nonchalantly.
"So, you mean I can try with Derek?" Laura asked hesitantly.
"I didn't say that," Cassie shrugged, "Whatever you do, I just want you to understand that you are worthy of being liked. And when you like someone, always remember to put yourself first."
"I understand," Laura nodded.
She used to be carefree like Cassie, but at some point, Cassie had become more mature and rational.
And Laura? Maybe it was time for her transformation too.
At eleven-thirty at night, Laura walked out of the hotel.
A black luxury car had been parked at the entrance for a long time. Derek personally got out and opened the car door. He glanced at Laura, who was draped in a coat, and suddenly felt that something about her seemed different in the night.
After getting in the car, they sat together in the back seat.
