Chapter 1532 I'll Give You Joseph

"So, last night, Derek brought his blind date, Blair, back to the Presidential Palace. Blair thought Maeve was adorable, and Derek immediately asked me to let Maeve hang out with Blair to make her happy," Laura said, clearly annoyed. "Maeve doesn't even know Blair, and she's not some toy for Derek to use to impress his date. Plus, kids have low immunity, and who knows what germs strangers might bring."

Cassie was surprised. She poured coffee beans into the grinder, then glanced at Laura, feeling a bit uneasy.

Unfortunately, what Cassie feared the most had finally happened, but Laura seemed completely oblivious.

Or maybe Laura sensed it too but just couldn't accept it.

The smell of coffee filled the room.

Laura said softly, "I might have overreacted last night and came off as petty. It's not that I don't want Derek to hold Maeve. Maeve usually gets along well with him, but I feel like he's mad. Do you think I should apologize? Derek must be mad. If I didn't show up for breakfast, he'd usually text me, but he didn't today."

Cassie said squarely, "Laura, not just anyone can enter the Presidential Palace. They have to go through health checks and disinfection procedures. Besides, you're not being petty. When you took Maeve to the Hernandez House, you didn't mind when some of their relatives held her."

Cassie looked at the brewing coffee, her gaze becoming more intense. "Have you ever thought that you're not being petty, you're just jealous?"

Laura stood up, almost laughing. "Jealous? Of Blair? I only see Derek as family."

But when she met Cassie's sharp eyes, she softened. "Maybe. Alright, maybe I'm a bit jealous. Derek and I used to be really close. Even if a good friend suddenly starts dating someone, I'd feel a bit upset."

"Just a bit upset?" Cassie smirked.

Laura went silent.

She was losing it. Why did she come here to talk to Cassie about this?

"Forget it, let's drop it. I gotta go." Laura lowered her head and walked towards the door.

"Laura, you've been in relationships before. Is it habit, dependence, or affection? Can't you tell?" Cassie said behind her. "Look at you these past few days. Every time we have lunch, you're distracted and always checking your phone, clearly waiting for Derek's message. You were like this when you were dating Benjamin."

"Stop it," Laura said nervously, "I can't possibly like Derek. Look at his status and mine. It's impossible."

"You two aren't related by blood. You live in the same place, see each other every day, and chat when you're apart. He's so good to you. Now, there's Blair. Seeing him make Blair happy, and all the kindness he used to show you now going to her, of course, you'd feel uncomfortable."

Was that it?

If not, then why did Laura feel so upset last night when she saw him passing Blair her favorite dishes and peeling shrimps for her, to the point where she lost her appetite?

Was Laura simply not used to it, or did she not want Derek to be good to others?

Laura found herself unable to think further.

Oh my God, why was this happening?

"Cassie, it must be because Derek's been around so much lately. Maybe if I meet some other great guys, I won't feel this way. Didn't you say Joseph could introduce some good men to me? Hurry up and set it up," Laura said, almost in tears.

Cassie smiled wryly, "Didn't you already meet three quality guys before? Honestly, they are all good—unmarried, decent-looking, with good prospects and family backgrounds. But you didn't like any of them. Where do you expect me to find better men for you? Maybe some are very handsome, but they might not be reliable. Also, those with good personalities might not be good-looking."

"Am I that picky?" Laura finally realized the issue.

"You're not picky," Cassie said honestly, "It's just that with Derek as a comparison, your standards have risen. But where can I find a man like Derek for you? Even if I offered you Joseph, you might not be interested."

Laura was speechless for a moment and then said, "If Joseph heard you say that, he'd be heartbroken."

"I'm just being honest," Cassie said, holding her coffee and smiling as she blew on it.

"Alright," Laura pouted, "Joseph is too cold; I can't handle it."

"Yeah, cold men won't do either," Cassie laughed, "So what kind of man do you want?"

"Derek isn't that great," Laura said, biting her lip in frustration.

"Maybe, but only you know best," Cassie said, pushing a cup of coffee towards her. "Want some?"

"No," Laura said, frowning as she left in frustration.

Cassie sighed again after she left.

Laura's love life seemed even more tumultuous than hers.

In the office, Laura stared at a document of data for a long time without absorbing any of it.

The secretary's voice suddenly came from outside. "Laura, your package."

Laura's eyes lit up. Every time she and Derek fought, he would have a delivery sent with something delicious to apologize. This must be it too. "What kind of food is it?"

She quickly stood up.

The secretary was stunned. "Food? No, it should be something you ordered online last time."

"Okay." Laura was disappointed.

The secretary gave her a strange look, placing the package down and then leaving.

Laura had no interest in opening the package on the desk. She took out her phone and sent Derek a Facebook message: [Still mad?]

Laura: [I was a bit harsh last night. Sorry.]

An hour later, Derek finally replied indifferently.

Derek: [It's okay, I'm not mad anymore.]

What a cold response!
