Chapter 1465 You Are Her Husband, Right?
Next, Derek went with Laura for a bunch of medical tests. When the chest X-ray came back, the doctor confirmed she had a fractured rib.
Laura couldn't believe Michael's kick was that strong; it actually broke a rib.
No wonder she was in so much pain and having trouble breathing.
"How long until I get better?" Laura asked, worry all over her face. "I still need to take care of my baby. And breastfeed..."
"About a month. You shouldn't even think about holding your baby right now. Be super careful not to catch a cold, or it could turn into a chest infection," the doctor warned, glancing at Derek. "You're her husband, right? You need to take care of the baby, and she has to stop breastfeeding."
Derek's face turned red with embarrassment.
Laura quickly corrected him, "He's not my husband; he's my brother."
"Your brother?" The doctor looked at them both. Normally, he was too busy to chat, but Laura was beautiful and Derek was handsome, so he couldn't help but be a bit curious. "You don't look alike, and you seem to be about the same age."
Laura stayed quiet.
"Please treat her as soon as possible. She's in a lot of pain," Derek urged.
The doctor told him to go pay the bill first.
Not long after, Cassie and Joseph rushed in. When they saw Laura sitting on the hospital bed, her chest wrapped up, Cassie was furious. "What happened?"
Cassie hadn't slept well the night before because of Michael's nonsense. Just as she was about to get some rest at dawn, she got a call from Lucas, telling her to go rescue Laura. She and Joseph were halfway there when Derek told her Laura had been taken to the hospital.
Laura leaned against the pillow, unable to move. She had an IV in her hand and was in pain all over. "Michael kicked me."
"You kidnapped Megan?" Joseph raised an eyebrow, looking puzzled.
Cassie immediately glared at Joseph. "You're giving Laura too much credit. She probably doesn't even know how to contact a kidnapper."
Laura sighed and said to Derek and Joseph, "Can you guys leave for a moment? I need to talk to Cassie alone."
"Alright, I'll go get you some breakfast. What do you want to eat?" Derek asked gently.
Laura realized she was hungry but was in too much pain to have much of an appetite. "The doctor said I should eat something soft."
"Got it." Derek nodded and left with Joseph, closing the door behind them.
Cassie looked at Laura seriously. "Laura, you know who kidnapped Megan, don't you?"
"You know me too well," Laura said with a bitter smile. "Actually, it was Bernice."
Cassie's face showed pure shock.
"Surprised, right? I felt the same way when I found out," Laura said, recalling Bernice's cold eyes and shivering. "Lucas figured it out first and contacted me. When we got there, Bernice was about to kill Megan. I stopped her because I knew it would be a nightmare if she actually did it. I checked Megan and saw her limbs were probably useless. Lucas thought if Michael kept digging, he'd definitely find out it was Bernice. The only way was for me to stay at the scene with solid evidence, so Michael wouldn't suspect Bernice. After all, I had a motive."
Cassie quickly caught on. "So your injuries were from Michael?"
Laura nodded, her eyes full of sarcasm. "Lucas took Bernice away just as Michael showed up. Megan is super important to him. I've never seen him so angry. If he hadn't needed to rush Megan to the hospital, he might have killed me right there. He was going to take me to the police station, but Derek arrived and took me away. But Michael won't let this go."
"Michael's lost it," Cassie said, clenching her fists in anger. "Megan's done so many bad things; this is just karma."
"But Michael doesn't see it that way. To him, Megan's been through a lot," Laura said. "It's actually a good thing I stayed instead of Bernice. I can't imagine what would have happened if he found out it was Bernice. He might have killed her on the spot."
"Did Bernice agree to let you take the fall for her?" Cassie asked.
"No, Lucas knocked her out and took her away." Laura recalled, frowning. "Bernice was really crazy and extreme at the time. We all hate Megan, but Bernice seemed to hate her even more. Lucas said Bernice and Nina were childhood friends."
"We're also Nina's friends, but we didn't go to the lengths Bernice did," Cassie said, feeling a bit guilty and thinking something was off.
"Yeah," Laura said sadly. "Since Nina left, we haven't done much for her. You see, when Nina was in prison, it was Joseph and Michael who helped put her there. Even though they were deceived, facts are facts. I thought I should take the fall, to protect Bernice and to get some revenge for Nina."
"Yeah," Cassie said, feeling heavy-hearted. She was happy now, but sometimes when she thought of Nina, it felt like her happiness was stolen.
Nina was a lifelong regret for them.
"Cassie, I'm only telling you this. I hope you won't tell anyone, not even Joseph. The fewer people know, the better," Laura reminded.
"I won't say anything. Michael might not let this go, but don't worry, I won't let you go to jail. Even if I have to contact my mom and have her pressure Carl," Cassie said.
Laura's pale lips moved, and she stammered, "Derek said he would take care of it."
Cassie was stunned, looking at her with surprise and a bit of teasing. "He's really good to you. If he hadn't arrived in time today, you'd probably be at the police station now."
"After all, I'm his family." Laura felt a warmth in her heart. At that moment, she was in pain, scared, and helpless, but when Derek appeared, she suddenly wasn't afraid anymore. It felt like she had found someone to rely on.
