Chapter 1616 She No Longer Cares
Bernice had already closed her pained eyes.
The prosecutor stood up, "From Nathan's testimony, it is clear that Megan had a motive for murder. From Megan's ex, we know she was highly skilled in hypnosis. Esmeralda was last seen with Megan, and within half an hour of Megan leaving, Esmeralda had a fatal accident. We consulted top psychological experts, and they confirmed that it is entirely possible for Megan to have hypnotized Esmeralda, causing her to become disoriented and fall to her death."
"Nonsense, this is just your speculation," Megan shouted.
"Your Honor, this is Esmeralda's health report from before her death. She was very healthy," the prosecutor submitted a document. "Here are some cases where people used hypnosis to commit murder."
After an hour-long trial, the judge finally pronounced Megan guilty. Due to her numerous crimes and the murder charge, the judge sentenced her to death.
"I didn't kill anyone, I didn't kill anyone, I was framed," Megan screamed in terror upon hearing the verdict. "You are wronging me, it's the Jude family that wants me dead, and the court is helping them."
A nearby officer quickly covered her mouth as she became more hysterical.
The judge's face turned extremely grim, "You are utterly ridiculous. You have committed numerous atrocities, harming both the living and the dead, and even animals haven't escaped your cruelty. Your methods are brutal and deceitful. The court will never let someone like you back into society to cause more harm."
With that, the judge and the court staff left the room coldly.
In the audience, Bernice closed her eyes, tears streaming down from under her sunglasses. Her hands clenched into fists on her knees: Mom and Dad, I have finally avenged you.
"That's great, Bernice, did you see that? Megan is going to be sentenced to death," Laura said excitedly, hugging Cassie and then Bernice. She paused when she saw Bernice's tears, "You..."
"It's nothing," Bernice quickly wiped away her tears as if nothing had happened.
"No matter what, we have finally avenged ourselves," Cassie said with a smile. "We should celebrate today."
"Yes, we must celebrate. Today, it's on me," Laura said excitedly. The grievances she had suffered were all revealed in the trial through Nathan's testimony.
Many people had once accused Laura of seducing Nathan, saying she deserved to be beaten.
Although Laura's reputation had improved, some jealous people still brought up her past online.
Now, the truth was finally out.
Laura had not seduced Nathan, nor had she intentionally climbed into Michael's bed; it was all Megan's doing.
This trial had given Laura justice.
And it was broadcast live, so many people online must have seen it.
"No need for you to treat us, I'll do it," Joseph said, hugging Cassie, also in a good mood. "How about we celebrate on my private yacht? The weather is nice, and we can go fishing."
"Going out to sea sounds great, I'm in," Laura thought of Derek and considered inviting him.
"I have no objections," Bernice nodded. As a celebrity, she always attracted attention wherever she went, but on a private yacht, there would be no reporters.
"Sure, I'll bring wine and food," Lucas said casually, hands in his pockets.
Bernice stiffened and glanced at him. She suddenly regretted agreeing to go.
But now, she had no room to back out.
Not far away.
Michael watched them talking and laughing. Even the usually cold Lucas seemed in a good mood, with a faint smile on his lips. Laura's pretty face was lit up with a bright smile.
Michael hadn't seen Laura so happy in a long time; her eyes seemed to sparkle like little stars.
He felt a pang of envy.
He heard them planning to celebrate on the yacht.
Once, he had been one of them, always included in their plans.
It was Michael himself who had severed ties with them for Megan.
Now.
Michael was filled with bitterness, hesitating and struggling for a long time before finally walking over, "Joseph, Lucas, Laura."
When he said the last name, his eyes were filled with pain and deep guilt as he looked at Laura.
Laura's expression instantly turned cold, as if she had swallowed a fly. She didn't look at him, just checked the time on her phone, "It's already eleven o'clock, shall we go?"
"Laura," Michael said urgently, blocking her path. "I'm sorry, I apologize for everything I did before. I was so foolish, repeatedly deceived by Megan and hurting you. I was so wrong."
"If you know you were so wrong, then you should understand that I have no intention of forgiving you or reconciling with you," Laura said, frowning with impatience in her eyes.
Michael's eyes reddened with pain, "Laura, I'm sorry. I didn't cherish our marriage, and I regret it so much. I've been filled with regret."
Laura didn't want to hear his remorseful ramblings.
If it had been right after their divorce, she might have looked forward to this day. But after finding new love, she had completely let go of the past.
Laura had come today purely for Megan.
"Let's go," Laura said, linking arms with Cassie.
"Sure," Cassie understood that Laura was only impatient and had no other emotional reaction.
The three women linked arms and walked around Michael, heading out of the courtroom.
Michael's throat tightened, feeling as if he had been slapped in the face.
"Joseph, Lucas," he said painfully, looking at the two men behind him.
Joseph glanced at him indifferently, "Sorry isn't a magic word. You don't need to apologize. Some things are in the past, and Laura might not care anymore."
As for Lucas, he said nothing and followed Joseph out.
Michael's body stiffened.
He understood the meaning of those words all too well.
But it was precisely because he understood that he was afraid and terrified.
He would rather Laura stand in front of him, mocking and accusing him, than be indifferent to their past marriage.
As he left the courthouse, he even heard people pointing at him.
"That's him, the husband of that murderer Megan."
"How could he sleep next to someone as terrifying as Megan, who even killed her own parents? Wasn't he scared?"
