Chapter 1318 Does She No Longer Care About Me?
"No way, this ain't normal at all. Why now, when everything was chill before? You might be caught up in this mess 'cause of me," Cassie spat out, her voice dripping with anger. "Isabella's been gunning for me 'cause of Olivia for ages. Since I’ve been laying low, she’s coming after you."
The assistant chimed in, "Could be, Mr. Chapman. Didn't you see Isabella this afternoon? Maybe it’s her?"
"Not a chance," Aiden cut in. "Isabella would never pull something like this."
"Dad, she's not the same Isabella you remember. She's gone off the deep end. She even kidnapped Sophia," Cassie jumped in, fuming, "She doesn't even remember you. Don't think she’s got any soft spot left. She probably wants to go after Declan now."
"Cassie, enough. I don't buy it," Aiden shook his head. "I saw her today and told her you were her daughter. I think she kinda believed me."
"You're dreaming. She's lost it, just a nutcase. You think you can reason with her?" Cassie snapped, "People like her should just drop dead."
"Cassie," Aiden warned, his voice rising, "you can't talk about her like that. She's still your mother."
"I don't have a mother that twisted," Cassie shot back, glaring at his injured leg. "She's dumb and evil. Plus, she got drugged, tricked, and played. You don't need to look for her anymore. I don't want to be her daughter."
Aiden was so worked up, his leg started throbbing in pain.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. Joseph showed up, carrying some supplements and fruit. Seeing him made Cassie uneasy.
"What are you doing here?" Aiden asked, his voice full of disdain.
"Heard you got hurt, so I came to check on you," Joseph said. It was the first time he’d seen Aiden since losing his memory, and he could tell Aiden wasn’t thrilled to see him.
But he got it; with all the crap he’d pulled before, no parent would be happy to see him.
"I don't need you checking on me. Take your stuff and leave," Aiden snapped, his anger flaring up.
Joseph stood there awkwardly. "These are really good supplements."
Aiden shot back coldly, "The Chapman family isn't broke. We can buy our own. Mr. Hernandez, you should focus on impressing Ralph's daughter. Maybe you can become Ralph's son-in-law."
Joseph felt a sting. He glanced at Cassie, but she looked indifferent, like it had nothing to do with her. His heart ached. 'Has she stopped caring about me?' he wondered.
"You should go," Cassie said, breaking the silence. "Since you’re dating Marigold, don’t give people the wrong idea. Marigold’s petty. If she gets jealous and targets the Chapman family, we can't handle the Dixon family."
Joseph thought, 'She’s right. Isabella already wants revenge on her. If they also tick off the Dixon family, she wouldn’t stand a chance. She’s gotta think about Aiden and the kid’s safety.'
"Cassie, let's chat outside," Joseph managed to say, struggling with his words. "I'll bounce after we talk."
Cassie hesitated for a sec, then followed him out.
This was a VIP ward, so the corridor was pretty empty.
Cassie leaned against the window, her beautiful face looking cold and distant.
Joseph thought about the sadness and anger he'd seen on her face earlier, and it tore him up inside. "Cassie, what happened today won't happen again. Just give me a bit more time." He thought, 'Once Isabella knows the truth, she won't be out for revenge anymore.'
Cassie looked at Joseph seriously. "Joseph, I don't care what you're planning. From now on, we don't need to meet unless it's about the kid. You don't have to visit my dad. Just go back."
Her eyes were so cold that Joseph instinctively clenched his fists. "I don't like Marigold. I have a reason for doing this."
"I know you have a reason," Cassie cut him off. "So we should keep our distance. How do you think it looks if you're cozying up to Marigold and also hanging around me? If Marigold finds out, I'll be in deep trouble."
Joseph was at a loss for words. He could only look at her, holding back. He'd heard from Rosalind that she moved back to the Chapman family today. Thinking he wouldn't see her at the villa anymore, he didn't even want to go home at night. Any place without her felt empty.
"I'm going back in."
Cassie turned and walked back to the ward.
Joseph wanted to follow, but his phone rang. Seeing "Marigold" on the screen, a look of disgust flashed in his eyes, but he still answered, "What's up?"
"I should be asking you that," Marigold said playfully. "Didn't we agree to have dinner tonight? I know you went to see Aiden, right?"
Marigold snorted, "Are you still hung up on Cassie? Why else would you go see her dad when something happened? Joseph, are you playing me these past few days?"
"I'm coming to see you now."
Joseph said, glancing at the door, then turned and left without looking back.
That night, Cassie stayed at the hospital with Aiden.
The next day, the assistant came to report, "Mr. Chapman, the police have the investigation results. The alcohol package was signed for by the delivery guy. He claimed he didn't see the alcohol during the inspection. The warehouse later caught fire because the manager secretly smoked a cigarette. When you suddenly arrived, he got so scared he dropped half his cigarette and forgot to put it out, which led to the fire. But the police found a suspicious large sum of money transferred to both their accounts from overseas."
"When was the money transferred?" Cassie asked.
The assistant paused, giving Aiden a complicated look, and said, "Seven or eight minutes after you left the Hernandez Group."
Aiden's heart sank.
Cassie closed her eyes and sneered, "Dad, do you still not get it?"
Aiden looked bewildered. There was probably nothing more painful in this world than realizing that the woman he once deeply loved wanted to kill him.
