Chapter 126

"“Yeah, Alexander did it,” Joseph glanced at her,“Dead men tell no tales, get it?”

A chill went down Cassie’s spine. Anger blazed in her eyes – Alexander, her own cousin, was completely inhumane.

“Could we... maybe negotiate a different arrangement?” Cassie hesitated after calming down a bit.

The idea of becoming his nanny again, with no end date in sight, was just too painful to bear.

“That’s doable,” Joseph chuckled, ""Well, my starting rate per case is no less than three hundred million dollars, and your case is particularly challenging. Plus, taking it on might mean making the Andersons, one of Madison's powerhouses, my enemies. Tell you what, I’ll give you a 20% discount. That’s four hundred million dollars.”

""Four hundred million?"" Cassie was stunned. ""Why don't you just rob a bank?""

“You don’t know how good you’ve got it. Do you have any idea how many people out there are willing to pay me well over four hundred million to represent them?” Joseph stood up, “If you're not interested, fine by me. My time is precious anyway.”

He walked towards the door, annoyed that she didn't call after him.

She was foolish not to recognize the opportunity he was offering.

Alright then, he’d just wait for her to beg him.

He slammed the door on his way out.

Twenty minutes later, Laura Miller came back.

After hearing the rundown, she summed up with a complex tone, “You know, he might actually have feelings for you. Why else would he insist on an exclusive relationship or prohibit you from seeing other men? He’s clearly jealous.”
Cassie's heart skipped a beat. ""As if I'd believe that. He just wants to tie me down as his personal, unpaid babysitter. I can't go back to that unhappy life,"" she said, her voice a mix of bitterness and resolve.

""Well,"" her friend Laura Miller chimed in, ""It looks like he's the only one who can help you now.""

No sooner had Laura finished speaking than Cassie's phone buzzed. It was David calling.

She answered, only to refuse David's offer to visit her in the hospital.

Not long after, a call from Arthur Lewis appeared on the screen, which she also ignored.

The reality of her situation soon hit hard as a subpoena from the Anderson family landed in her hands. Her court date was set for next week.

After getting discharged, Cassie scrambled to find a lawyer, but no one dared to take the case.

""Miss Brooks,"" one attorney told her bluntly, ""taking your case is the equivalent of declaring war on the Anderson family.""

""Miss Brooks, even if you beg me, I can't help you win this,"" added another.

With the days counting down, Cassie was plagued by sleepless nights, anxiety tightening like a vice around her chest.

Out of options, she finally dialed Joseph Hernandez's number, only to be greeted by his assistant.

""Miss Brooks, Mr. Hernandez is currently unavailable. What can I assist you with?"" the assistant inquired.

""I've reconsidered Mr. Hernandez's offer to handle my case. I'm ready to sign the contract,"" she rushed to say.

Walter, the assistant, gave a regretful chuckle. ""I'm sorry, but it's too late now.""

Cassie was met with silence.

""Miss Brooks,"" Walter continued, ""Mr. Hernandez's every second is precious. Some opportunities don't wait around forever."" He hung up before she could respond.

As Walter turned away, he caught a glimpse of Joseph Hernadez, coolly sipping his coffee, exuding an air of ease and comfort.

Walter's lips twitched in a slight grimace, muttering under his breath, ""Mr. Hernandez, everything's been done as you instructed. I'm sure Miss Brooks will be begging you for help soon.""
