Chapter 1789 Seeing Lucas Again
"That's true."
Gary couldn't deny this point.
When they were dating, Bernice was really good to him.
But he was the type who didn't like being too comfortable. When he hadn't gotten Bernice, he wanted her. Once he had her, he quickly grew tired of her.
Moreover, his family later pressured him to get engaged; otherwise, he wouldn't have broken up with Bernice so decisively.
Half an hour later, the charity event began.
When Nina took the program from the waiter, she found a small card tucked underneath.
She unfolded it and saw a sentence: "What do you want? I'll buy it for you later. Gary."
A trace of sarcasm flashed in her eyes.
A moment later, she discreetly put the card into her handbag.
Halfway through the auction, a Demetrius ruby necklace was presented.
As soon as the price was called, a man in his thirties bid six million dollars.
Nina glanced indifferently, and a Best Actress with some connection to Bernice leaned over and whispered in her ear, "That man is Mr. Ross's assistant, right? I heard Mr. Ross's fiancée loves these kinds of necklaces. At every Whisperlyn City auction, Mr. Ross buys most of these necklaces."
"Is that so?" Nina's eyes were indifferent. She didn't know why the Best Actress suddenly told her this. Was it to make her jealous?
Seeing her disinterested look, the Best Actress laughed, "Don't get me wrong, I just feel a bit sorry for Mr. Ross. He spends seven to eight million dollars, sometimes even tens of millions, on jewelry for his fiancée every month. He must be quite troubled, especially since Mr. Ross hasn't inherited the family business yet. Ms. Kim is known for her extravagance. I heard she spent three hundred million dollars in a month a couple of years ago, which infuriated the Kim Family."
Nina became curious, "Can she earn money herself?"
The Best Actress laughed as if hearing a joke, "She holds a vice president position at the Kim Family company, just for fun. She usually spends her time abroad watching fashion shows or traveling with friends. Some people are just born lucky, but such women can be a headache for men to marry."
Nina smiled noncommittally.
Midway through the auction, she got up to use the restroom.
When she came out, Gary, dressed in a burgundy suit, was lazily leaning against the wall with his hands in his pockets. His tall, handsome, and elegant face wore a smile that could charm any woman.
One had to admit, Gary was handsome enough to make Bernice fall for him.
"Have you decided what you want?" Gary stood up and walked towards her, his eyes filled with tender affection.
Nina secretly sighed, thinking how similar her fate was to Bernice's, both encountering bad men.
But they could only blame themselves for being unable to resist a handsome face.
"What if I say I want that Demetrius ruby necklace?" Nina looked up, her beautiful yet cold eyes flashing with amusement.
Gary wasn't angry; instead, he seemed more interested. "Are you jealous?"
Nina curled her lips, feeling a bit disgusted by him.
"Bernice." Gary suddenly leaned close, his thin lips near her ear, his hoarse and deep voice softly calling her name.
Nina instinctively took a step back, looking at him warily.
Gary smiled, his eyes rippling with emotion, "Bernie, you seem different from before. You used to be like a little lamb, but now you're quite charming."
"Mr. Ross, you have a fiancée. It's inappropriate to say such things," Nina reminded him coldly, "You don't want to make me your mistress, do you? I didn't expect Mr. Ross to be interested in rekindling old flames."
"You're not just any ex," Gary said affectionately, "To me, you're special because you were the first woman I made love to. I still remember it vividly. Bernie, when I heard about Lucas forcing you, I felt quite regretful. I shouldn't have brought you into the entertainment industry back then."
As he spoke, he reached out to touch her earlobe.
Nina sharply stepped back.
Gary's hand fell short, and he sighed softly, looking forlorn, "Are you still mad at me? I had no choice when we broke up. You were pushing me too hard, and our social statuses were too different. My parents didn't support us being together. Bernie, can you forgive me?"
"What about when I tried to kill myself?" Nina asked coldly, "When I attempted suicide, I just wanted you to see me. How did you respond?"
Gary was stunned for two seconds, then said, "I thought you were just trying to threaten me. When I broke up with girls before, some of them also threatened suicide, but they were after my money. I knew you were different; you genuinely cared about me."
Nina bit her lip, "You're always so good with sweet talk."
"Bernie." Gary's eyes were overflowing with tenderness as he reached out to hug her.
Suddenly, a man's low, amused voice came from behind, "Am I interrupting something?"
A familiar voice.
Gary froze, and Nina looked past him, then was stunned.
She almost didn't recognize him.
Lucas had cut his hair very short. Wearing a black tailored suit and silver-framed glasses, he had lost some of his former elegance and grace.
Now, Lucas's skin was a bit darker, and he exuded a wild and unruly aura.
Nina suddenly remembered that Lucas had been released from prison.
But it was strange that he came to a charity event right after getting out instead of working overtime at the company.
"So it's Mr. Nelson." Gary quickly calmed down. In the past, he would have feared Lucas, but now the Nelson Group was being suppressed. It wouldn't be easy for Lucas to cause him trouble, "I didn't expect three months to pass so quickly."
"Yes, I didn't expect to see this scene right after getting out."
Lucas smiled charmingly and walked up to them, "Mr. Ross, you look quite charming when you talk sweetly. Do you say the same things to Ms. Kim? Should I ask her?"
Gary's face changed slightly. "Mr. Nelson, you should take care of your own company's affairs first. Bernice, weren't you lost and didn't know how to get back to your seat? I'll take you there."
Lucas was too dangerous. He didn't want Bernice to be alone with Lucas. If anything happened, it would be troublesome.
"No need, I'll personally escort Ms. Ramsey back later." Lucas smiled at Bernice, his eyes dangerous yet meaningful, "We're old acquaintances."
Gary frowned and warned, "Lucas, what are you up to?"
"Bernice, you're quite something." Lucas teased, "I've only been gone a few months, and you've already hooked up with Gary again."
