Chapter 507
"Examine these," Joseph commanded, thrusting two documents into her grasp. "One is a DNA analysis, the other an autopsy report. Both irrefutably confirm that the woman in question is Joyce, of the Ray lineage. The physician has also verified that Joyce has never undergone any form of cosmetic alteration. Nina has deceived you, Cassie.”
She unfurled the reports, her eyes scanning the contents rapidly. A wave of disbelief washed over her. "Impossible, Nina wouldn't betray me," she protested, shaking her head in denial.
Joseph's frustration was palpable. "You've been utterly duped by her. Consider the length of time you've known Nina versus how long you've known me. Yet, you choose to place your trust in her over me."
He was visibly aggrieved by Cassie's refusal to cooperate. "I heeded your advice and detained Joyce. Consequently, Nina orchestrated her murder. The authorities apprehended the arsonist, who is undeniably one of Nina's associates."
Cassie staggered backward, appearing as though she might collapse onto the couch.
Reacting swiftly, Joseph enveloped Cassie in his arms, his voice laced with concern. " Cassie, be careful, remember your condition..."
However, Cassie rebuffed him. "I am certain Joyce is Olivia. There was an uncanny familiarity about her when we first met..."
"Enough," Joseph interjected, disappointment clouding his gaze. "Your jealousy of Joyce is blinding you. You're fabricating reasons to convince yourself that Joyce is Olivia. Why can't you trust me? If you had any semblance of rationality, you wouldn't have allowed Nina to manipulate you so easily. Joyce is gone. Her parents are mourning. Doesn't their loss stir any remorse within you?"
Cassie shivered, a cold dread seeping into her bones. "Is that your perception of me? Why can't you trust me? And what about Laura? Did she commit any transgressions?"
"Laura is innocent. It was you who involved her in the paternity test, which incensed Michael," Joseph retorted icily. "You ought to be grateful. If not for my intervention, Michael wouldn't have been so lenient. He would have leveraged his influence to annihilate Peace Group."
Cassie felt a sense of despair creeping in. So, Laura had been ostracized because she had crossed Michael? She glanced up at Joseph. When did he and people like Michael assume they had the right to ruin someone's life due to their privileged status?
"I made a mistake," Cassie admitted, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I shouldn't have represented you at that Summer press conference."
If she hadn't attended that event, Joseph wouldn't have reclaimed his status as Madison's wealthiest man, and her friends wouldn't have been endangered.
" Cassie, do you comprehend the implications of your words?" Joseph's anger flared at her regret. How could she rue aiding him for the sake of those insignificant individuals? Could Nina and Laura ever measure up to him? He was her husband, after all.
"Would you assist Nina and Laura? They are my friends!" Cassie retorted, her voice rising in volume as tears welled in her eyes.
Laura, in particular, had been a constant presence in her life since their middle school days. They had weathered countless storms together, and Laura had always stood by her side.
"I refuse," Joseph declared, his patience worn thin. He turned his back on Cassie, striding away.
"Joseph, I despise you," Cassie sobbed.
"I'll handle the affairs at the Peace Group. Your responsibility is to take care of yourself and our unborn children," Joseph stated, struggling to maintain his composure at the sight of Cassie's tears.
With those words, he pivoted and made his way toward the main entrance.
"Joseph..." Cassie attempted to follow him, but Walter intervened, " Cassie, don't quarrel with Joseph. He has been at loggerheads with Michael because of you. Joyce's parents have even confronted him, blaming him for their daughter's demise. Joseph is equally distressed by all this."
