Chapter 110
"Damn it, he'd never before entertained the thought of strangling a woman.
Cassie's legs trembled with fright, but she couldn't cry; why, oh why had she come tonight?
""I was wrong, just a moment of shallowness, please let me go.""
A flicker of deep fear crossed the woman's face, her eyes were like those of a frightened kitten, afraid to come any closer.
Joseph Hernandez felt an inexplicable twinge in his heart, his first flutter of emotion given to a woman so unworthy.
""Get lost.""
Unable to contain his rage, he flung her to the ground, ""Don't let me see you again.""
The man's throw was forceful; Cassie hit the floor, her knees throbbed painfully.
Fighting to stand, she snapped back, furious, "" Do you think I'd want to see you if it weren't for Dakota? With your erratic moods, who could stand you?""
With that, she bolted, vowing never to return to this place.
Inside, Joseph Hernandez felt a tight wire in his brain snap.
He grabbed the pastas she'd cooked, about to smash the bowl to the ground, but remembering he hadn't eaten properly in days, he set it down and chose a cup to shatter instead.
Afterwards, he felt an unbearable hollowness.
Why allow a worthless woman to rile him up so much?
To say she couldn't stand him.
Had she forgotten her sweet nothings, her face changing like an actor's on stage?
Fine then.
He'd never want her back— even if she came crawling, he wouldn't give her a second glance.
Eating the pastas, he cursed; they were so damn spicy they made his stomach ache anew.
But that pain was nothing compared to his heart endlessly twisting...
............
Back at home, Laura Miller was applying a face mask.
Seeing her return, she quipped, ""Back so soon? Thought you'd spend the night.""
""The hell I would, I was worried about Dakota,"" Cassie replied, her thoughts drifting to Dakota, and especially those three adorable kittens.
Sitting down next to her, Laura Miller teased, ""You seem awfully concerned about Joseph Hernandez's cats, you know.""
""What's that supposed to mean?"" Cassie frowned.
Peeling off her mask, revealing a rosy, flawless complexion, Laura Miller pressed, ""You live with him, he's played hero more than once, so, do you have a thing for him?""
Cassie hesitated, her feelings conflicted.
""At first I approached him with a motive, but when he saved me from Anthony, I was truly touched. Then, when he rescued me from that old house, I sincerely wanted a life with him, even considered giving him my all... but then everything changed and I came to my senses...""
Laura patted her shoulder comfortingly.
Cassie managed a wry smile. ""You know, I crave being cared for, cherished, but with him... with him, all I felt was indifference, contempt, a complete lack of self-esteem. It's like everything I did was wrong; as if I were more annoying than a fly. I had no freedom, I was exhausted, and after learning that she isn't Arthur Lewis's aunt, my desire to escape has only grown.""
""Cassie...""
""It's just better when I'm with you,"" Cassie said as she linked her arm with Laura Miller's. ""We can have our favorite meals, late-night snacks, go shopping—just totally unwind. Too bad you're with Benjamin. Otherwise, how great would it be to be with me?""
""Get lost, I'm not into that,"" Laura pushed her away with an air of disgust, then sighed, ""But Benjamin's always so busy, guess I'll just hang with you for the time being.""
Cassie couldn't help but think about Isla, who once stayed close to Benjamin. ""At that party I went to, I ran into Isla. What's her deal with Benjamin, really?""
