Chapter 240
"A frigid gust swept through, causing Robert to shudder. For the first time, he felt the sting of regret. He couldn't help but wonder how a family that was once so solid could crumble so drastically in less than three months.
The following day, Robert received a jarring phone call. He had been removed from the board of directors of Peace Group. Enraged, he stormed to the company, only to be denied of entry by the security guards. They eventually forced him to leave.
With no other options, Robert found solace at the bottom of a bottle. He spent his days wallowing in bars, returning home in the early hours of the morning, drunk and disoriented.
On this particular evening, he staggered through the entrance of his villa, heavily intoxicated. The darkness inside was all-consuming. The only light that came in was the pale moonlight filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
In the middle of the living room, a wheelchair was visible. An elderly figure was hunching over sitting in it. with her black hair disheveled and wild, creating a terrifying silhouette.
Fear gripped Robert, making his legs buckle. He turned to escape, but the front door slammed shut behind him, casting the hallway into even deeper darkness.
""Mom..."" he whimpered, collapsing to his knees, trembling uncontrollably.
""Why are you so afraid of me, son?"" She moved her wheelchair forward slowly, as the elderly voice croaked through the silence.
Panicked, Robert scrambled backward. ""Mother, please, stay back. I swear it wasn't me—you're mistaken.""
""How can you say it wasn't you?"" The elder's eerie laughter echoed through the living room. ""All for the sake of shares, for money, why did you treat me like that? Haven't I given you enough throughout your life? Even the Reaper turned me away, so I had no choice but to come back for you, son...""
As the wheelchair inched closer, Robert collapsed on the floor, hitting his head on the ground. Tears and snot streamed down his face. ""Mom, I'm sorry, so sorry. I was seduced by evil, but it wasn't me. It was Helen. She smothered you with a pillow. Go find her!""
""If you hadn't agreed, would she have killed me?"" The elder retorted, her laughter tinged with sobs.
""Mom, I'm sorry!"" Robert sobbed in despair. ""I was egged on by her and her daughter. I didn't want to do it, Mom, please, I'm at fault, let me be.""
""Well, since you admit your error, I'll take you with me now.""
The elderly woman's skeletal hand reached out for him, causing Robert to freeze in terror so much so that he wet himself.
Suddenly, the lights in the hall snapped on.
Several police officers emerged from the kitchen, and the old woman in the wheelchair stood up, removing her wig.
Robert was taken aback, shivering in shock. ""Mrs. Parker...""
""Mr. Robert, someone reported you for the suspected murder of Natalie. You're now under arrest,"" a police officer announced, fastening the handcuffs around his wrists.
""No, no..."" Robert recoiled, attempting to back away. ""I'm drunk, I've been talking nonsense.""
""I've got every word on tape,"" Cassie stepped forward, brandishing her phone, her face etched with grief. ""You were her only son. She loved you and raised you through hardship, and in the end, you conspired to kill her. Do you remember how she died? Do you not have nightmares? Doesn't your conscience hurt?""
""Stop it...""
Robert's sanity teetered on the brink, overwhelmed by the alcohol and the shocking turn of events.
Cassie spoke coldly, ""I've gathered a lot of evidence. If you don't want to spend the rest of your life in jail, you'd better come clean now. Otherwise, once we go to trial, Helen will definitely deny everything.""
Robert was skeptical. ""What evidence have you gathered?""
""She was hospitalized, and the medical records are clear. The doctors said she might've been paralyzed, but she wouldn't have died suddenly. And then there's the nurse you hired to take care of her – she's ready to testify too.""
