Chapter 1278: Olivia is Dead
Cassie remembered seeing this dude hanging with Declan before.
Yesterday, Declan had her back, so Cassie couldn't say no, "Alright."
She was heading to the parking lot anyway.
The crew took the elevator down.
Joseph, like a kid in a candy store, pressed his face against the elevator glass. The glass was clear, and he could see the crowd on the first floor below.
"Whoa, Cassie, check out all those people."
Declan's assistant gave him a double-take. The Joseph from the news was always this tough guy; his behavior now was just plain weird.
Cassie didn't bother explaining to Declan's assistant. Once they hit the parking lot, she convinced Joseph to hop into Nathaniel's car first.
"No way, I wanna stay with you." Joseph clung to her hand.
"Alright, fine." Cassie had no choice but to bring him along.
Cassie opened the car door. Declan was chilling in the back seat. She hesitated for a sec, then let Joseph get in first and sat by the door herself.
"Hey there." Joseph flashed a sweet smile as soon as he saw Declan.
He remembered Cassie told him to be polite to grown-ups.
"You're so tall." Joseph looked at Declan, whose head almost touched the car roof, "But Cassie said if I eat more, I'll be as tall as you."
He kept rambling, and Cassie felt a bit embarrassed.
Seeing his goofy look, Declan frowned and pointed to his own head, "Is he always like this?"
"Yeah." Cassie nodded.
"What happened to him?" Declan asked.
"David did it." Cassie said straight up, not caring if he believed her or not, "Declan, why'd you call me here?"
Declan glanced at her. She was being all polite now, and their vibe seemed closer.
He didn't mind, thinking she might be Isabella's real daughter, and they could be family soon.
"Olivia's dead." His thin lips barely moved as he dropped the bombshell.
"What?" Cassie was totally shocked, her eyes widening, "You gotta be kidding."
Declan watched her reaction, knowing she was genuinely clueless. Honestly, he had been a bit worried she had Carl order the guards to kill Olivia.
Guess he was overthinking.
"She's dead. Last night, I got home late, and Olivia fell from upstairs and died. The guards said she fell trying to escape. Her body's already at the funeral home."
Cassie was stunned.
How could Olivia just die like that?
Olivia had gone through so much trouble, spinning lie after lie to become Isabella's daughter, just to get back at her and Joseph. Now she was fine, but Olivia suddenly died?
Cassie felt like she was dreaming.
"How could Olivia die so easily?" Cassie said blankly, "This can't be real."
"It's real." Declan nodded, unfazed, "It's just someone dying, no biggie."
Cassie smiled bitterly, "You don't get it, Olivia and I have been at each other's throats for years. Every time I was about to win, she'd flip the script. She made my life and my friends' lives hell. I never thought I'd beat her; I just figured we'd end up destroying each other."
Declan gave her a long, hard look. It was clear Olivia had pushed Cassie to the edge, and yeah, he and Isabella had a hand in it too.
"I checked Olivia's body. She was pushed down the stairs. Besides the butler and servants, only the guards were in the villa that day."
Cassie paused, thought for a few seconds, and said, "It was probably the guards. If the butler or servants had pushed her, the guards would have noticed, unless it was someone within the guards."
"You're thinking the same thing I am."
Declan looked impressed, "I've already informed Mr. Jude about this. He was shocked too and has started a secret investigation."
Cassie nodded, "Uncle James just became president. Stanley's old crew might not all be under his thumb yet. Meanwhile, those who've been with Uncle James all these years have also climbed the ranks. Some folks might have their own agendas."
"You're pretty sharp." Declan raised an eyebrow. He was now more convinced she was Isabella's daughter. Isabella had also been calm and wise, but unfortunately...
"I actually suspect someone." Cassie said, "Ralph. He's tight with David now. David probably feared Olivia would rat him out, so he had the Dixon family help with the murder."
"As far as I know, this guy is a key aide of Carl's." Declan's eyes flickered, "David and he got to know each other through Olivia, and they haven't known each other for long."
"You don't know David well enough. He's super sly, way more than Olivia. I think Olivia was just a pawn for him. Plus, the Wit Group has blown up; it's stronger than ever. David even locked down Yugrot's medical channels. Ralph used to look down on him because David wasn't qualified, but now it's different. Who doesn't want to make more money and gain more perks? After all, businessmen and politicians are like peanut butter and jelly."
Cassie smiled, "I visited the Dixon family once and hung out with his daughter a few times. She was super arrogant, didn't even respect Carl's goddaughter. A daughter's behavior reflects her parents' private education. I think Ralph is pretty ambitious too. Now that he's climbed the ranks, it's like the more people have, the more they want."
"What you say is quite interesting."
Declan looked impressed, "If it really is him, then it's a problem. Carl probably won't fall out with Ralph."
"Yeah, he just secured his spot. Losing Ralph, a key player, would be a big hit. Don't be fooled by Uncle James being nice to us; that's only if it doesn't mess with his position." Cassie was very self-aware, "He'll probably try to smooth things over."
"Cassie, what are you talking about? I don't get it." Joseph, who had been squeezed between them, suddenly pouted and complained.
"Sorry, Joey, Declan and I are almost done talking." Cassie comforted him softly, then looked up at Declan, "Thanks for bringing me this news today. If there's nothing else, I..."
"I took Isabella to the hospital for a check-up yesterday. Your suspicion was right; Olivia had been drugging her food." Declan interrupted her.
