Chapter 532
"Why can't you trust me, even a little?" Joseph's voice echoed with a note of irritation. "Do you truly see me as such an irresponsible man?"
Trust, Cassie thought, was a gift bestowed by another. What had he given her? First, Joyce had disappeared, and then Megan had taken her place. "You're always out, always with her, and you're hardly ever home. What am I supposed to think?" Cassie's voice was strained, her patience wearing thin. Joseph's face registered shock at her words.
"I...I don't know..." Joseph began, but Cassie cut him off.
"Countless people who know both of us have sent me pictures. How am I supposed to feel about that?" Cassie's voice broke as she wiped away the tears streaming down her face. "I'm carrying your child. Why can't you provide me with a sense of security? Do you have any idea how terrified I was when I saw those pictures? And I couldn't even reach you on the phone."
"I was discussing my illness with her at the hotel yesterday morning. Nothing happened between Megan and me," Joseph protested, reaching out to pull Cassie into his arms.
But Cassie pushed him away. "Don't touch me. You smell like her. It makes me sick."
"When did I start smelling like another woman?" Joseph sniffed at his clothes, detecting a faint, unfamiliar scent. His face paled slightly. "I'll go take a shower."
Cassie turned her face away, refusing to look at him. She didn't want to cry, but ever since she had become pregnant, she had been consumed by worry and insecurity.
Joseph sighed, beginning to undress in front of Cassie.
"What are you doing?" Cassie's voice was sharp, her face flushing with anger.
"I want you to see for yourself that there are no marks on my body. I'm innocent," Joseph declared, spreading his arms and spinning around for Cassie to inspect him.
Cassie couldn't bear it any longer. She rose to her feet and shoved him towards the bathroom. "You're a pervert. Just go."
"Honey, don't cry. I've only ever been a pervert with you," Joseph responded, pulling Cassie into his arms and planting playful kisses on her face. "I only want to be a pervert with you."
"Joseph, I hate it when you act like this," Cassie protested, raising her arm to strike him. Instead of feeling comforted, she felt a growing sense of unease, and her tears fell more freely. "From now on, you're not allowed to see Megan again."
"Honey, that's not possible," Joseph replied with a bitter smile. "Megan is the only one who can cure my illness. Do you want me to forget about you and our children so young?"
Cassie bit her lip in pain. "But I can't stand it when you're always alone with her. Unless you let Megan come to the mansion to treat you, and I'll stay outside."
Joseph gently pinched Cassie's cheeks. "How jealous you are. How did I not notice it before?"
Cassie stared at him, her voice firm. "Joseph, you need to understand. If it weren't for the child, I wouldn't bother with you."
"What do you mean?" Joseph's eyes narrowed. "Are you saying you're only with me because of the children?"
"Think about what you've done. First, there was Joyce, and now it's Megan. I'm exhausted. I don't know how much longer my love for you can last," Cassie confessed, her voice bitter.
Joseph felt a pang of regret. He had never expected Megan to become his therapist, and he had certainly never considered rekindling their old flame. "Honey, I'll do whatever you want," he promised.
