Chapter 255

"Cassie couldn't believe it. He had never insisted on checking her phone before, but now he was invading her last shred of privacy. ""Joseph, you're crossing the line.""

""Am I? How do I know you're not secretly communicating with Arthur or David behind my back?"" Joseph had always despised the idea of men snooping through women's phones, but the smile that lingered on Cassie's lips just now made him uncomfortably anxious to find out the truth.

Cassie never imagined their trust could dwindle so low. But showing him her texts might lead to another misunderstanding. So, trying to be upfront, she said, ""I was talking to Laura about her boyfriend’s issues, and she mentioned taking me to the hospital to visit David. If I can't go myself, is it wrong to ask a friend to do so?""

She watched as Joseph's features visibly hardened, and a wave of weariness suddenly washed over her.

""Do you really miss David that much? You're in my bed right now!"" Joseph snatched her phone and hurled it against the wall.

The crash startled Cassie, and she covered her ears. Joseph removed her hands and pinned her to the bed, his lips crashing down on hers fiercely.

""Tell me, who kisses you better, David or me?""

His kiss, like a tempest, claimed her, and Cassie felt pain as he overwhelmed her. She pushed against him to no avail.

Having finished a bottle of red wine in the study, Joseph's possessiveness flared up in an instant. The image of her kissing David flashed in his mind, igniting a fiery rage that colored his eyes a fierce red. His kisses became increasingly intense and demanding.

""Stop, it hurts!"" Cassie tried to dodge him in pain.

""I kiss you and you pull away. Is David the one you desire?"" Consumed by a jealous rage, Joseph tore her nightgown. ""Was that night with him so unforgettable that you had to meet up at the police station today? You just can't get him out of your head, can you?""
Cassie was petrified, her hand latching onto his as she shook her head helplessly. ""Please, no... I'm extremely tired. I've been scared out of my wits today, Joseph. I don't want to...""

""Oh, you don't want to? It’s more like you're not in the mood for me,"" Joseph sneered coldly. ""Your mind's full of David, isn't it? If it were him, you'd be willing.""

""Why must you misunderstand me like this?""

She was truly exhausted and disillusioned. She had nearly died today, and he didn't seem to care at all. He only harbored doubts about her.

With a mournful smile, she ceased struggling. ""Fine, take whatever you want from me. Do with me what you will, okay?""

Tears slipped from the corners of her eyes, weaving into her hair, her gaze desolate.

His suspicions and humiliations were trampling on her again and again; she was human too.

Joseph's body stiffened, as if his brain had been struck. Why had he become like this, a devil out of control?

Just over a woman, he had lost his senses to such an extent.

He stormed into the bathroom and turned on the shower. As the cold water cascaded over him, a wave of self-loathing engulfed him.

After coming out of the shower, he found Cassie asleep, turned away from him at the edge of the bed, curled up like a small, defenseless quail.

Joseph lay on the far side. There was a meter of empty space between them, yet neither made a move to close the gap.

He didn't know that Cassie, with her back turned, had tears streaming down her face and struggled to find sleep until very late into the night.

At dawn, Joseph woke up and found that Cassie was no longer in bed.

He quickly went downstairs and saw Cassie sitting at the dining table, eating oatmeal.

His expression softened slightly. He took a seat across from her and asked with a cold voice, ""Where's my breakfast?""
